Flat Loading

Hi there everyone,
I’m reading ‘Periodization: Theory & Methodology of Training’ Bompa. I have just got to the part about flat loading. Would it be possible for someone to illustrate this loading pattern to me in real training terms as I’m having trouble grasping this concept.
Thankyou for your help.

Shaun Tyler

Don’t waste your time reading that book Westernised periodization doesn’t work - nearly as effectively as the conjugated method of training. So my advice to you study CONJUGATED TRAINING

Shaun
is a great book read it.
Don’t believe who didn’t understand what Bompa is trying to say in this great book.

Flat loading.
First you have to identify the load.
Then this load is maintained thorugh all the mycrocyles.
You can think at weight work

first mycro : 3x3 squat 80%
second 3x3 squat 80(82,5%)
third 3x3 squat 80(85%)

Always with 80 kg is straight flat…but maybe the stimulus on the body will be less in the second mycro using the same percentage…so you can use 82.5% …
or,if you think that increasing of 2.5% means bigger stimulus, but even if mainntaing the same load you will increase the intensity then you can think at 3x2 82.5%… and so on…
understood the logic??

This example is very simple and stupid…but it open many doors.

Thanks ever so much for your help. I’ve got the jist of it now. I’ll definately carry on reading the book. Once I’ve finnished it I’ll look into conjugated training. If you know of any further reading or resources I should look up please let me know.

Thanks.

Fulkrum my reply to Shaun was straight to the point and that of experience, I’ve read all of Bompa’s work and did a correspondence course with him. I’ve also worked with Louis Simmons on 2 occasions who is an expert in the conjugated method. And, I happen to make my living as a professional strength coach so the methods that I apply have to be result orientated!!! THAT’S WHY I APPLY CONJUGATED TRAINING!

Traditional periodisation does not work as well as conjugated training. Keep all elements in your program at all times, just vary the emphasis, depending on where you are in your plan/season.

In my point of wiev(and not only mine), who takes the concept of the classic periodization in a rigid, schematic way hasn’t understood well Bompa.

For instance Bompa has produced many olympic medal athletes…
and you say understanding his method is “waste of time” ?

Well Bompa’s stuff can’t be all that bad, after all, Charlie’s weight program was based on what Tudor presented for many years (it did change later though), so there must be some merit to it.

Could you give me a working example of conjugated periodisation please?

I agree with you.(Note this is not a criticism of the conjugate method). Many people view Bompa’s and Stone’s methods as being completely linear but if done well(like Charlie) it is only linear in the short term.
I’ve had very good success with athletes using these methods(also success with conjugate) as long as I did not keep the more advanced athletes in various phases too long and always featured unloading weeks. There was another thread here not long ago about similar topics.

My post was not an attack on Bompa, I was merely saying from experience that I felt the conjugated method was superior to the traditional approach to Westernised periodisation. And suggested to Shaun he would be best suited concentrated his efforts there. Maybe my words were a bit strong in suggested reading the book was a waste of time!

I believe Bompa has come out very recently and said his methods were very questionable!

I have only recently joined this site and the biggest theme I see is how complicated many of the post’s are on developing strength don’t get caught up in not being able to see the forest through the trees scenario.

Power…
Are the rugby team you work with taking creatine? I heard that some teams had come off it.
Whats your thoughts?

This is the order of importance in regards to the supplements I advise my players to take once I’m certain the player know’s his metabolic type!

Phamaceutical grade fish oils
Extra virgin coconut oil
Probiotics
High quality Multi
Neurotransmitter enhancer e.g. Tyrosine
Recovery Shake

Then I will advise on taking Creatine but only on the training & game days

No extra Vit ‘C’?
Recovery shake has protein i assume…but taken only after training?
I would think that extra protein would be needed on off days to further aid the recovery/repair process

Does the neurotransmitter enhancer mean that your players are the best at Sodoku?!

Anaerobic you ask me a question I give you an answer!

Yeah…but im asking another question!! LOL

Why are they coming off of it? Any specific reason?

Anyone have any references to this?

Apparently cos some players were getting muscle cramps.
I am a firm believer in creatine (esp. as am a veggie)…thought answer to muscle cramps was to drink more water.
I have been taking CP for 10 years and have never had any probs.

They are probably just taking too much of it as is usually the case…
