Do protein shakes work?

[QUOTE=John;209563]Speendurance.com: What is the best protein recovery drink for sprinters who have to wait 1-2 hours until they got home from practice to eat a solid home cooked meal? There are a lot of opinions out there, ranging from no carbs (Phil Campbell), 1:1 protein:carb ratio, 1:2 (John Berardi), or even 1:4 (Jacqueline Berning). The ultimate goal is proper recovery and performance.[quote]In my personal opinion, the major benefit of taking carbs PWO is to produce an insulin spike. The insulin helps shuttle the protein and other nutrients into your system at a time when it really needs it to repair tissue damaged by the workout just completed. From my recent experience, the dose required is varies dramatically person to person. I need a very small quantity of carbs to get my sugars up, some others require a larger quantity. If you don’t have issues with sugar (diabetes) or weight J(calorie issue) 1:3 or even 1:4 is probably fine, and will ensure maximum uptake of protein and nutrients.

I agree here, while using an “organic” powder may result in more ethically treated animals I can’t seem to find any reason why WPI would be any different, from a nutritional and molecular level.

80-100g of carbs? So, how many tablespoons of dextrose would that be?

5 - 6 should do it.

I will never forget a meeting with a coach who came from Oz to meet Charlie. I invited this person to our home for dinner and he quickly reported the next day that Charlie had a personality of a door knob and I was arrogant and crazy to believe that supplements work and protein shakes make a difference. This was in the early 1990’s not too long after I had begun seriously training with Charlie. At the time I was 26 years old and could not get my weight above 120 pounds.( I am 5"8 )I knew my training was not a problem and I was getting lots of rest and I love to eat and cook but nothing changed until a friend of mine helped me with amino acids and supplementation. I had some initial problems with digestion etc. which I wont get into but the results were remarkable.
Your training must be organized, you must get rest and drink lot of water and where you receive your advice and how you apply the information is also critical. Not everyone will respond with the same result because not everyone needs the same and some people are simply more physically intact than others for a myraid of reasons. I hated racing against woman who outweighed me by ten or more pounds but I did a pretty good job of making the most out of what I had. By the end of my career I put which was in 1997 I was racing at 128 to 130lbs.
Today I still take supplements and protein almost daily and still weigh 130lbs and still believe I feel better, look better and perform better by making sure all the nutrients, minerals and building blocks are in place. Rock on and good luck
hope this helps.

Ange uses the term “coach” loosely, referring to this charmer. Ivory tower know-it-all would better describe it. No surprise really as those with the least connection to the real world are also those least able to see any benefits.

I even get some of my clients onto Meal replacement drinks - Because they simply dont know how to eat - dont make time to eat (esp breakfast) or just are too lazy to change to good foods. Even those that are eating good foods, some lack protein, so i put them on a protein powder (normally with breakfast).
Its evident within only 3 days the improvement that happens to these people. Often i see as much improvement in them 3-4 days as i had seen in the previous 1month when not using supplements. Crazy. And then you can tell when they have not been on them…Improvements slow right down.

To me, its a clear choice. Take supps

Surely an aussie would not have said that!!

5-6 tablespoons of sugar sounds excessive, no?
