Your opinions on THE BEST weight room excerises for sprinting?

What the THE BEST excercises for a sprinter to perform in the weightroom?

My votes go to:

squats
powercleans, powersnatch, jump squats, high pulls (sort of like an explosive deadlift)
push press
bench
dips

Any other ideas?

Cheers,

Chris

Awesome thanks!

It really depends on your circumstances, such as:

  • Facility quality and equipment availability
  • Lifting background and technical aptitude of your athlete in question
  • Amount of time you have to train in the weightroom
  • Any pre-existing injuries, conditions or flexibility deficiencies present in the athlete

Until you can determine the above criteria, you cannot make up a list of the best exercises for sprinting. Ideally, yes, we would love all of our sprinters to be performing cleans, snatches, etc. with top of the line Eleiko equipment. But this is rarely the case.

Do not forget lunges(it builds the muscles in the running position, therefore building the muscles used in running) Also, with doing all the olympic lifts you have to make sure you are also doing extra work to strengthen the hamstrings… stiff leg deadlift, glut ham raises… poor flexibility and lack of strength in the hamstrings are the most likely causes of hamstring pulls.

  1. Leave lunges to your mum.
  2. Olympic lifts are a hip extension exercise!
