Warmup prior to Competition/Meets

Hey guys,

I am curious what you all do in your warmups for meets that may be different from your regular warmups?

I find I am so adrenaline rushed that I sometimes go too hard in the warmups especially strides before the race.

How do you time your warmup? When do you start before the meet and do you do anything differently that you would in practice? Any tips for the morning of the meet?

I used to find doing a slight warmup, drills and a couple of strides helped activate my CNS in the morning if I had a meet around 12:00pm.

Then I would start my regular warmup at the track about 40-60 minutes before the race.

thanks!

Chris

your pre-competition warm-up should be the same warm-up as you follow during practice. Never throw in something new or (new regimen) the day of a meet. Keeping things the same will allow for less CNS drainage and will keep you at a proper level of awareness.

But that’s more general warmup stuff, everybody basically says what dlive said for pre-comp.

Usually they will make a first call. in bigger meets the event can run up to 30 minutes or more behind schedule. I look at the schedule and see if they are on schedule and if not how far behind they are. I loke to give myself a 45 minute slow extensive warm up. I start with my head phones on and just walk around the warm up area. I get myself pumped up and thinking about the race. My walk flows into a jog, then my jog flows into an almost tempo rum. I try to get sweating. Now I start my drills and stretching. I first take my warm up drills that I do in practice and I break up my race into segments. Say for instance I start with anklets, I do my anklets and in my mind I am envisioning exploding out of the blocks while I am doing my anklets. Then I move to say high knees. in that I am thinking about the first 20 meters of my drive phase. and so on until I have visually ran a complete race. Finally I have this great sweat, I have visualized my race plan once more, and I am now mentally and physically prepared to run my 400m. now that I am waiting for them to marshal us onto the field I relax and stretch and seclude myself from the rest of the group, with just me and my walkman. sometimes coach will have something to say but if he does I take that in and meditate on that as well.
