Tyson is hurt..

Ato Boldon :"Bad news - Tyson is hurt - GROIN. I know how this ends (see last year’s injury) but I am hoping otherwise!

It’s not the injury its the lost comp/training time/confidence that did him in."

From what I’ve heard, its sport hernia (i think) and it shouldnt, at least hopefully, affect his season much.

that is good!

Damn that sux…I hope it’s just media hype. If it’s true, a sports hernia might hurt the start of the 100. Once he gets upright it hurts less…

I’d say it’s a problem, especially if he wishes to challenge the current WR holder, who is likely to break his own WR’s this year. They sound like they are treating it like a hang-nail.

Rumors Of Gay Injury Overblown Says Agent

As anticipation for a great matchup of rivals builds, the rumor mill, too, often shifts in to overdrive, and that, according to agent Mark Wetmore, has driven the exaggeration factor in rumors circulating on the internet and around the European circuit that Tyson Gay is injured and may not make it to his appointed sprint meeting with Olympic superman Usain Bolt at the World Championships next month.

The double world sprint champion does have a sore groin, but Wetmore, Gay’s manager, told T&FN on Tuesday evening that the injury is neither a traumatic new development nor a malady that is likely to keep Gay from defending his titles in Berlin.

“It’s really more of an annoyance than an injury,” Wetmore said. "More something that he has to manage in training than an injury that affects his racing. It’s been developing for a long time over a period of years and recently it’s gotten worse. Tyson saw a doctor who’s a specialist in that area in Munich and the determination was that it’s something he can wait till after the season to deal with.

“The doctor assured him he won’t damage it more by racing. So he’s on a plane and still plans to race in London [in the 200 scheduled for Saturday, July 25].”

As to what kind of treatment may be required after the season, Wetmore, who is not a doctor, said he believes minor surgery is one option being considered.

Gay, who has run a 200 PR (19.58) and equaled his own American Record in the 100 (9.79) this season, fully expects to contest both sprints at the World Championships, Wetmore said.

Oh brother… an annoyance that needs surgery? I think it sounds more than just an annoyance…

I know those annoyances. I had an annoyance for 3 months and finally put me out of action for 12 months.

Tyson can’t perform at his best with an annoyance

If anyone can solve the problem for him, it’s Muller Wolfhart. The Dr fixed him up after an injury this winter and you’ve seen the results so far. That said, the agent will be under tremendous pressure to minimize the injury so as not to affect box office sales until the very last minute.

There are quite a few examples of athletes competing on a world class level with hernias and then having surgery during the off-season. Tim Lobinger pole vaulted on a bilateral hernia throughout the 2007 season (SB of 5.83), for example, and if there is any athletics event that is demanding on your abdominal and groin region it’s the pole vault.

BTW: Lobinger described this injury as migraine in his pants, which hints at the annoying rather than debilitating nature of this condition.

Let’s wait and see what Gay doesn in London before drawing any conclusions.

I think his presence or lack of it will tell us a lot about how serious it is.

This type of injury can hinder someone depening on the injury area. But I do agree with you, let see what he does in london.

I hope he gets through this. I saw him at the NYC grand prix and hes a really good guy. Wish him all the best… He got his work cut out for him that’s for sure.

Possibly, but he might opt out of any 200s to concentrate on the 100m in Berlin, and, after that, he could decide whether to run the 200m there.
That would be my advice as I think the 100m is his best shot.
Another option might be to use his problem with corners to try to force his way into the 100m in London, which would then force Bolt to either run him when he’s not expecting him (and may have done more work than optimal for this race in prep for Berlin, expecting either a walkover or a loss only to a countryman as in 2008.) or to shift to the 200m and look bad in the process after claiming he’ll run anyone etc. (We already know that’s not true cause he dictated that Gay could not run in Toronto).

Why do you think he said no to racing Gay in toronto?

Cause he’s expected to win and he would only sign to run when he’s not fully ready if he knew it wouldn’t come back to bite him in the ass.
Happens all the time.

Tyson went to the Dr in Munich right after Rome (i can openly tell it because it was mentioned in the press).

This was posted on TFN today by gh, who is one of their reporters and forum moderators. I forget his name, but those are his initials. I believe pretty much everything he reports.

I saw Tyson Gay on the street last night, walking from his hotel door to a taxi… errr, except it didn’t look to me like he was zackly walking. Walking with pain was more like it. Definitely seemed to have a hitch in his getalong. On the other hand, maybe he always walks something like that, and I’ve never stopped to pay attention. But my uninformed take would be that all is not well in Tysonland.

I saw him walk in May and he walked a little bit funy… do not worry!

Tyson spends a lot of time shaking his leg with his hand at the same point, and his start was not good in heats and quarters. Hope he gets back to default mode by tomorrow.

Yeah his starts were really poor and it looked like he had to expend to much energy trying to catch up.

I have also noticed that when he walks around the track he has a huge sway from side to side, but that just may be the way he walks.

People have commented in the past he looks like a nervous guy but when it comes time to race he performs like the 2007 world champs, lets hope he does the same.

Tyson is out of 200m! His groin is bad… :frowning:
