During the period we had a team meeting about Spring Football. From my offensive position, from what I understand is that I will be playing slot receiver. They plan on getting me the ball from that spot. One play they talked about it having me motion into the backfield and having me be the pitch man on the speed option. I’m real excited about this. I also really need to work on my ball skills hard from now on. Can’t be inconsistent catching the ball like I was last year.
As far as weights go, we will no longer do much auxiliary work. We will just stick to the core lifts which is a smart decision the coaches made this year.
Right after last season, everybody was saying that I was going to be RB though. Slot receiver is fine, it just that I’m real worried about my ball skills right now. I’ve got no way to train by myself to get better ball skills, I almost never have anybody to throw to me. I’m at 5’9, 170 right now. After track I want to get it up to 185. After track, I’m also going to hit those combine tests hard. My goal is a consistent sub 4.6.
5’9 170 you gonna have to be a 4.3 type RB to play in college at the d1 level, where i know many 5’9 170 great slot wr. You are soo worry about weight gain just get faster and stronger and let the weight come on natural bc if you are 5’9 185 and run 4.6 vs 5’9 165 running 4.4 which look better?
I agree 5’9 165 4.4 looks better. You think its possible to lose .2 before football season with the type of training my coaches have me do? I think its possible but how am I supposed to do it with little speed and power work. Keep in mind that if they don’t provide it, I will find time to do some speed and power work on my own. Also wouldn’t extra mass help me run faster?
I also play defense. I will most likely play OLB, maybe SS. The added weight would help me on defense, but you don’t see too many 5’9 170lb OLB’s or SS’s come out of high school at that size. If they were smart, they would have had me play corner since my freshman year. They say the reason they put me there is because of my strength levels .
My junior year was a waste. I started the year out playing OLB, then for some reason they switched me to WLB(ILB). I didn’t even start, I alternated series with another player. I still managed to have 28 tackles, 2FF, 2FR, 1BLK, 3Sacks, 1PD, 1 38yd TD on FR, and made 2nd team all-district. It was pretty stupid to have me taking on fullbacks that weigh 30lbs more than me at that position. Playing football in college is my dream, I just don’t know what position I will end up at. I know for a fact I won’t play OLB because I’m not 6-4, 230. So far I have drawn zero attention to any college. Who would draw attention to an extremely undersized LB? I might wind up being a walk-on, but I really don’t mind that at all. I really just want to play college football.
What you play in high school (position) does not gurantee the position you’ll play in college!
Like tamfb said, you’re going to be a slot receiver or corner with the size you have… You play LB in high school yeah, but high school is not college ball… Shit even if you got up to 185, still would be a wr or db.
Example, my friend came into the jc I played at as a wide receiver (6’4" 225) his freshmen year; next season the coaches moved him to DE and now hes on full scholarship at a d1aa school going to be starting DE this season at 6’4" 275.
Alright well thanks guys for helping me put full focus on being a slot receiver. If yall didn’t correct me on this, I’d still be thinking I was a LB/SS, but I now understand that I am not one. I will just play OLB for my team if they want me there.
During the period we did a little bit of team and ran some routes. I caught the ball ok, only dropped one off pass. I know I can catch the ball alright its just that I have always have these concentration lapses that always prevent me from my full potential.
After that we lifted weights
Box Squat-275x4, 295x4, 335x4, 385x4
Incline-155x4, 165x4, 190x2, 205x1
Deadlift-just threw weight around, don’t want to kill myself before the meet.
ABS
I’m still very sore, going to do a contrast shower later. I haven’t felt anything in my quad yet, I guess its better. I have a meet tomorrow, I hope to get my best time ever since my quad isn’t bothering me anymore.
Isn’t there a way where you can explain to the coaches that you SHOULDN’T be heavy squatting the day before a meet, let alone any lifting? I don’t get it… My fb coaches in high school were cool about the track guys doin their thing during track season, as long as we still attended most of the workouts, meetings, etc there was no problem.
By the way, I didn’t mean to retract all of your thinking away from defense. You should still put effort into playing wherever they feel you will help the team out. If you play olb/ss and slot receiver this season, then you should be happy that they think you’re good enough to start both ways.
I was just saying that at the next level that wr/db is probably your route.
How are your grades? What are your plans for college? Have you started to send out tape, questionnaries, etc? Now’s the time my man.
We have squatted heavy the day before every meet this year, imagine how fast I could run if I was fresh. I still haven’t been able to reach my best time which was 11.36 since the first meet. That’s why I say I have some dumb coaches, and there isn’t any way I could change it. I’ve tried to slack off but they are watching every set. I am so sore still, but I still have to go out there and compete with my best effort.
I will still put slot wr first before olb/ss. My grades are ok, GPA is probably around 2.8-2.9, but I could possible get it up to 3.1 probably by next year with the classes I’m taking. I have no tape for slot wr, only for ILB. Several of my teammates have asked for some game tape about 2-3 months ago, but the coaches don’t put the effort into stuff like that. I have filled out quite a few questionnaires, but I don’t know if that opened up any eyes.
You should look into attending some camps, combines, etc from now until end of summer. Try and get some exposure, get your name out there.
Just because you fill out a questionaire doesn’t mean you have to give up and not contact anyone. Be persistent man. There are rules and regulations on when coaches can be in contact with players/recruits, but that doesn’t mean you can’t contact them.
Most athletes will know by the end of there jr yr if they are a d1 athlete, unless they have a big sr most likely they not gonna be a d1 prospect. like i told you before no matter what happen i would do something similar to what twhite did and walk on to a d1 school, not a school like UT but bu, tcu, smu etc. The only way these combines and camps will help is if you go there and blow up the test and thats gonna be hard since you havent been preparing or prep for them.
