Is there a big problem in jogging the rest intervals for a tempo session or will this decrease the quality of the running intervals?
Ok, I think I got it.
You walk between intervals so that you won’t accumulate lactic acid and won’t exhaust your muscles. This will actively promote recovery as there is a smaller degree of stress on the body than jogging between intervals.
Correct?
Thats my take on it.
If I jogged between intervals my heart rate would be way to high. I dont think I would necessarily accumulate lactic acid but the next rep would definatly be sloppy and most likely slower. I like to consider ext. tempo a relaxed stride quicker than a jog but obviously slower than a sprint (A RUN).
But if I was real tired when it was time to start the next rep in an ext tempo session the jog (which was between inervals) wouldnt look much different from the actually rep. Whereas The walk and the rep look and feel totally different.
We’re over complicating a simple idea. But yea definatly walk between reps.
Our group mixed it up! Its great…For example a tempo session we did last week consisted of 100m@13 sec/ jog 50m /100m@13/jog 50m/200m@27/walk 50m/100m@13 walk 100m. Try mixing walks and jogs and see how it goes!
This is entirely individual depending on such things as muscle type, weight, surface, time of the interval etc. Sometimes run, jog, walk hastens recovery (within exactly the same break time- not if the jog gets you to the next start mark that much sooner, of course) Regardless, I’d be less inclined to use jog intervals on a hard surface, due to the increased risk of shin-splints.
One Q; can be tempo done with sprint footwear or must be normal footwear for running?
You can use whatever you like but I find trainers promote relaxation and stop athletes from trying to run too fast or only on their toes. It is also less stressful on the shins.
