Why worry about a 100m time when you aren’t running it? that’s exactly why I didn’t want to see him doing the pro runs now. Concentrate only on the 60m, which is the focus of training now
Very good point.
The pro’s offer 70m races. Would they be an idea?
Possible I suppose
my point exactly and i couldnt agree more…
have heard that we have as much time as we want right up until the games and have some meets planned at a better time of the season where he will be out to 100m in his work…
Nanny - would you at all possable be able to outline roughly what you do in a session with the Jets? if your interested in sharing, we could start a new thread? or just PM me so we dont side track this thread?
Nanny
I am looking to get into the same type of field as you in the near future, S&C with teams and T&F coaching, i just wanted to know ur academic background and coaching/athletic background. Thanks

10.88 in Canberra ??
Well my prognostications weren’t incorrect. Ross looked technically bad at Lampton ( heavy contacts). Last week’s Mingara run was at very best 10.5e. In Canberra it was 10.88.
At the Sydney Track Classic, Ross’ skinfolds looked way too high. S-L prep don’t work unless you’re doing all the additional med-ball, hurdle walks, and full volume of tempo runs.
On two occasions my comments were true reflections of the real situation. My posts have been reporting as bad, by the ass kissers who are too pissed scared to say the truth.
The fact is, Ross looks out of shape. As Charlie says if it “looks good, it flies”. And Ross ain’t looking the goods.
Having a former HSI guy close to me running 9.9 or even 10.2s doesn’t come easy.
Are you saying the supplementary work in the S-L periodisation is necessary for general conditioning purposes, that are easier to get as a training effect from L-S?
you know he isn’t doing that, how?
Is he training by himself too? I always think it must be harder for people when they do that. Not only for the reps themselves, but also just for the general atmosphere.
I was at the meet in Canberra yesterday, and I’ve never seen Josh run so poorly. He was never in the race, and faded so far back after around the 60m mark. It seemed like the others took off and Josh didn’t have any “kick” to challenge them.
I don’t know what’s going on with him these days.
A lot can happen in 12 months, I suppose…
will be posting here through the good and hopefully not so often bad times…
yesterday looked as KK stated in another thread “a tempo run at best”
going in we had no set time as a goal but Josh said something 10.6? would be good… the events leading into the race, many of which i will address tomorrow did not go anywhere near making this happen.
after the race he said he felt after his practise start he did not have any of the leg speed he had prior to the calf issue so decided to not push it.
as for skin folds he is now 82.5kgs (181.5lbs) some 3.5 kgs (7.7lbs) lighter than his weight at WC, and is hiting PB’s in Bench & Squats in the gym.
one positive i guess is that he now has a run under his belt and a time to improve on next weekend in brisbane… the only way is up:D
for those who are dying for him/me/us to fail there are many more who are waiting us to be successful
I have to wonder whether Josh even wants to compete any more? Or whether he’s been so distracted by other issues in his life that he hasn’t been able to come to the track with a clear mind and a singular determination to achieve an objective.
Was he disappointed with his run in Canberra?
Sharmer looks like his estimation of the worth of that previous run was correct, so credit due there. But never seen a man celebrate a failure with quite such glee.
I have known two guys who spent time over in Canada with Charlie and they came back looking in amazing shape. They said to me that these supplementary exercises are of key importance. The volume is high, which provides the needed conditioning that sometimes S-L preps don’t provide.
In Australia I know two coaches using S-L preps and their athletes have gone backwards. None of their athletes looked ripped or ready. To me that’s a major problem. I can guarantee they’re probably not doing the full 10x10 hurdle walks or 200+ med ball throws or 2km volume of tempo.
I don’t want JR to run slow. Given that we date back to numerous small country carnivals 2-3 years before he won any national titles gives credence to that. I just don’t think the right training systems or experience are in place. No harm in calling a spade a spade. I am sure that eventually they will get their performances back on track, however these hiccups are not needed. The psychological damage may already be inflicted - JR is not like Steffenson their personalities handle down times differently.
Fair enough. Good call, especially on the emotional resilience … I know we all wish JR and all athletes the greatest success.
One thing to look at - is JR has really only changed coaches like a few months ago to a supposedly different training system.
He is only at the moment doing efforts out to 60m max - these outdoor 100’s are basically Tokin events right now it seems. Whereas others are doing indoors - he Has to do 100’s - but only efforts out to 60m.
Actu affected his nerve in his foot/feet, seems to still be recovering - didnt feel right before Canberra so did an easy as effort instead.
I think it will take at least to the end of Aussie summer before he does Anything that will please outside partys?? 100m wise that is.
Nanny, any ideas on when Spp2 Comp phase is due to be played out? This is when some Fast 100’s will start to be played out, its pointless Guessing now how fast his outdoors times will progress out to.
When all the right training is in place, Josh is a big time performer. Winning all those gifts from scratch and winning 4 national titles is testimate to that. Josh feeds off running well, however things can fall apart quite rapidly when they go bad. If I was coaching him he wouldn’t race for 4 weeks. I remember in 1999, Matt got beaten in 10.8 early in the season. He went on to win nationals that year. However he got beaten in late Oct. So he had plenty of time to get himself in shape for nationals.
I don’t think JR has the time to get ready before Nationals. I am sure that if he got the right training in his legs now by adding SE he would get the A standard during March-April and he would still make the team. JR strength was his ability to hold 0.87 splits for final 40m. The current S-L prep won’t have that in place until too late. JR would not be the hardest athlete to coach. If I was in charge over the next four weeks, I would start 3x150 @ 16.0 7minutes recovery. Increase recovery by 4 minutes per week and drop times by .02 each week. By the end of the month he would be posting 15.2s and ready to run 10.2 again. Acceleration could be tested using the speed gun once a week. If he he could get hit 11m/s (0.91) at 30m and held that average velocity for the next 70m he would run no worse then 10.28e. (based on 3.98 first 30m - a long away from Powell’s 3.80).
This is why I find running in Canberra bizarre. Wasn’t the 10.6 H 100m result one week earlier enough evidence to suggest, he needed more time ? Why not test speed via light gates or speed gun before entering the cauldron of competition? The NSWIS have all these testing equipment. Maybe coaches need to be trained in how to maximize testing. For me racing soon again after 2 bad performances is fraught with danger.
Unless someone goes sub-10.10 or very close, I would think all the 100 guys will be given until June 23 to come up to speed. So in that sense the domestic season results are of lesser consequence than they are often build up to have. This applies across events. The only threat to selection will be if three other athletes all attain the automatic selection criteria. And for those who do not support the domestic circuit, they may find themselves funding their own tour abroad as they seek to establish their Olympic selection claims.
Is that even looking possible with the current crop this Aussie summer season? 10.10 that is…
