Ross looks to bare bones

That 3x150 dropping rest looks a lot like a Pfaff workout. Seen somthing similar before.

Care to elaborate on Pfaff’s workouts? Always interested to see how the greats put the science into practice!!

Tellez would use something similar before major comps. My theory is that if you can hit 11ms at 30m and hold 0.90- 0.93 speed until 150m, than the worst performance would be 10.2. I am sure with that level of acceleration & SE capacity the potential is there to run 9.9ish. I know John Smith didn’t train his 100m guys to hit 0.84 in training. He worked on trying to hold 0.89 for longer splits.

Probably where Dan got the idea too. Start season at 6x200 or 8x150 or similar at almost ext tempo pace then bring down to 3x150 or 3x120 or similar extending the rest along the way. Doing that along with S-L accel to maxv type progression. Seemed to work there. I would guess that they stay away from truly trying to hit those .84’s except in perfect conditions b/c of injury risk. I don’t really know though. I hope Ross smokes 'em however he trains. I’m just discussing, I’m in no postiton to lend criticism or advice. Nice to have the discussion too.

in reply to a PM as to a weekly set up…

Monday - tempo
2x(10x100m) 10pu/20su

Tuesday - Speed
8x Explosive Med ball throws over HJ pit
10+20+30+40+50+40+30+20 blocks
gym

Wednesday
Boxing - pilates/yoga

Thursday - speed
3 x 30m blocks [4]
80 + 120 [20]
str end 5 x 30m
gym

Friday - tempo
10x(2x100m)

Saturday - speed
4 x 30m blocks [7]
3 x 70m [15]
gym

Sunday
rest/massage

I like that set up 8x150-3x150- 3x120. John Smith 100 guys do a similar progression but they would go out to repeat ( 300m x5-8) in pre-comp phase. Usually with 5 min recovery at 40s pace.

I am pretty sure Dan gives options for longer runs (250 or maybe even 300) as well if there is athlete preference/need. I am not sure but I would imagine they taper down for indoor as well. Would make sense to.

that aint the program JR is following

How is the program going?

12.6 120 Lampton ( strong tailwinds)
10.6 H Mingara
10.88 Canberra

The most optimistic would say his form has been disappointing.

JR program looks to be aimed at 60m at the moment. Don’t think S-L will suit him. Having watched him run for longer than most, he would be well suited reverting back to L-S. Or at least modify 2x100x10 tempo to 10x200 or 8x300.

Ross has something bothering him greatly, as of a couple of weeks ago, and his program and coaching is not part of it, but they surely have been wrecked by the former. He needs to leave his woes behind when he comes to the track but from what I understand has been utterly incapable of doing so. Bottom line is, you have to train well if you want to race well - whatever start you use, whatever program design you follow, whoever the coach may be.

The timing of this “other matter” couldn’t have been worse if it had been planned that way by people trying to undo the guy. It seems to have been bubbling along for quite a while but came to the surface around the time when Ross was trying to move on from his initial acupuncture misadventure.

I wasn’t going to mention it (and I’m not offering details because they are personal to Ross only) but when a coach is blamed for matters outside his control, I think someone should at least provide the board with advice that there are issues in play other than mainstream coaching matters. Unfortunately I think Ross is the only person who can resolve his own problems and he’d better do it extremely fast or maybe just forget about the Olympics this year.

All I can say is all the best Josh, this little Australian wishes you well, as do 99.9% of the population.

Yes, yes it is. Its not aimed for the aussie summer program 100’s - its aiming for Oly games outdoor 100m - 60m now, 100m at oly time.

So he wont run a flash time in aussie summer, So What?

If training is well thought out and progressive and if the athlete sticks with it then success will come. Everyone has bad times and good times with success and less success but eventually things will come to the light.

The training has been all you suggest, but how many interruptions can a man tolerate before it reflects in his results?

I am also aware of these personal issues. However, every time, something goes pear shaped for the JR team. I hear these excuses, it’s not our fault. After the acupuncture event, Mingara & Canberra, subsequent comments are always beating the same tune. It’s not our fault.

Why not accept some responsibility?

If you ever accept the responsibility of coaching you may begin to understand why your question says more about you than it does about Nanny.

hahaha, thats funny:D
really - is he going to get over his issues like, right away? in one race? he is but human.

Give the guy a break

SO WHAT???

The guy’s head is in a bad place at the moment. He’s training with teenagers and not sure of the training setup. He might even give up the sport, and you say “SO WHAT?!”

Everyone has interpersonal relations that go through hard times. Mate, it’s pathetic that it’s being used as an excuse. Sorry the training is not right, don’t see it any other way. The fact is JR is down because he has got little confidence from his current form. I can gurantee that if he runs 10.1 in Canberra, he would be on top of the world.

“If you ever accept the responsibility of coaching you may begin to understand why your question says more about you than it does about Nanny.”

Sound advice KK.

Sharmer - that tail breeze at Lambton had you only running 12.34 off 13.25m. That is lucky to be 11.6 for 100m.

For a guy who was low 11’s and 22’s at 16-17 it seems you are a fair way off the times you should be doing.

And that doesn’t surprise me. I have read your training journal with interest and it strikes me that it’s a bit all over the place with little structure and lacking in any real direction and purpose. I’m not sure whether you want to win a 70m pro race or the Sydney to Hobart.

I reckon you ought to get a tad more credibility in the field, proving your own theories in a practical sense than offering coaching advice to a bloke who has been at it for over a decade.

Whilst in Canberra I was speaking to a man who knows Josh as well as anyone and he’s not surprised Josh is not running well. He said it doesn’t matter what training program you give him, Josh’s personal issues will prevent him from delivering the performances we all want. He is a unique and complex character and it requires the coach to be a lot more than just providing the training program to get him right.

I have said before (and made this point on another forum some 4 months ago) I would be very reluctant to coach Josh as I haven’t got the patience and probably lack certain ‘skills’ to handle him. I admire Nanny for taking him on. It is presumptious of anyone to offer coaching advice without knowing the full story.

Nanny took over Josh when he was probably at his lowest. He was grossly under-trained and had just come off his worst international performance since he burst on the scene over 4years ago.

Perhaps when you start up your own stable and spend a few years at the coalface you might just appreciate there’s a lot more to coaching than thinking a few 150’s are going to be the panacea to Josh’s problems.
