Problem with reaching max speed

Ok last night I had a friend time me in the 100 to see where I’m at, now granted it was rainy and about 40 degrees outside and I wasnt coming out of blocks nor did I have on my spike but I ran a 14.19! In meets I avg 11.8-12.2 so needless to say I was shocked to see I lost 2 seconds. On the way home I was trying to think where I went wrong and the only thing I could think of is when I was at about 50 meters I felt like I could go faster and I pushed myself a little more {it reminded me of pushing the speed burst button on Madden} And I noticed that I do the same thing in football on kickoffs and such but in meets I know I’m at 100% because the only thing runnning through my head is to beat this guy next to me. Basicly my question is has anybody had this happen to them and how do I train my body to do what I do in meets in practice?

You gotta be in sprint shape to sprint you cant just go out there anytime of the year and expect to drop 11’s

There’s probably some psychological thing to it. Either that or maybe you hit a bad stride or something, was what I’ve heard. Something like this happened to me in Provincial Qualifying. I was in 1st or 2nd in the race and had a great start about half way through and then all of a sudden I just started slowing down. I crossed the line tied for fourth and lost the tie breaker so I never made it to provincials. Too bad, would have been a great time I would have clocked.

maybe you tensed up and lost your form?

Don’t even worry about that “timed” run… It’s best if you just forget about it. There were too many things you did wrong to take that on-the-fly timed run as any sort of indicator of the kind of shape you’re in. Next time, good conditions, good spikes, outa blocks, and an electric timer, and then you can understand how fit you are. I don’t think you should ever take any of your workouts too seriously until you do them in proper conditions. I practice on a gravel track, without lanes 1-2 and 1/2 of lane 3 because of water damage, my 200 and 300 intervals are almost 2 seconds off, but I don’t let it bother me if I can’t hit them in 28 and 43 seconds…
