Overhead Bench Press

What do you think about over head athletes (baseball, volleyball, javelin) doing bench press?I have heard mixed results from coaches, especially old school ones who only want to do partial range of motion, or just use dumbbells. Does it really matter, besides the integrity of the shoulder joint, that range of motion is below 90 degrees of elbow flexion? Also, does upperbody pressing take any precidence at all in a training program? I have heard that some coaches prefer a 2:1 pulling to pressing ratio when perscribing exercises.
