Optimal Sprint Spikes

What about those spikes that have the “aerodynamic shroud” covering the laces? Does this just add unecessary weight, or can you feel a difference with them slicing through the air?

I have the 2002 Mizuno Chrono Dash and they are excellent. I can pull my toe up and they feel great. The straps really hold you foot in a comfortable and supported position, well as supported as a spike can be.

However, I love how light and quick my feet feel when I am running barefoot (say for tempo runs on grass.) I think that the ultimate spike would be to have the spikes surgically implanted in my feet :o xlr8

Imagine stubbing your toe at 30 miles per hour. Ouch:D.

It seems that many of this seasons spikes incorperate a rigid or non-flexible spike plate ( 4 more power on toe off )
Is this a current trend - one that’s going to increase injuries .
There’s a real problem in the uk at the mo - unless ur lucky enough to live nr one of 5 - 6 specialist stores u have to order ur spikes online b cos ordinary sports stores don’t stock them .
I’d be really interested to know if anyone can recommend any current models bearing in mind Charlie’s warnings .
I was thinking of splashing out on some Mizuno Chrono Dash - anyone got any experiences ?

Whats wrong with the quality of Adidas shoes? I just bought a pair and I think they are pretty good. Of course, this is my first pair of adidas spikes!!

Also, do u guys try to keep your competition spikes relatively unused except for meets?
I barely ever use the spikes I compete in at practice!!

i got the ceal id spikes from nike you know the white ones, than monty wore at edmonton i love them Best spikes i also have the superflys comfortable show and the spike plate puts you right up onto your toes both shoes are great.a I really wanna try the blue miz ones but dont have the money for the japans shoes to pricey.

Just a friendly reminder…
Feet come in different sizes, shapes, widths, depths and have different heel to ball lengths etc. There is no perfect sprint spike for everyone. I know a certain contributer to this sight who had turf toe. a flexible spike plate kills him and interupts training. Rigid would be better but lots of stretching to protect the achilles!!!

I have to agree with xlr8, the japanese are churning out some great spikes. I have a pair of the mizuno tokyo, a real bargain at £45! Having worn Nike and Adidas in the past, i can safely say that my tokyos are by the best yet. They allow the big to sufficient movement as not to hinder the big toe, yet stable enough to support a powerful athlete. I found the Adidas spike way too flexible, and it was £80! Just goes to show the expensive ones aren’t always best!

Athlete,

Spikes are essential. You will answer this question yourself if you try it out. Once you get to a certain level of explosion on your starts (espeically if you aren’t using blocks!), you will need spikes or you will simply slip and lose all of your power. Get some spikes and use them, if all you have is an asphalt track, then use your football cleats on grass.

I was going to ask the same question as athlete and I just wont to glarify this.
Im doing short sprints 20m-40m for my takedowns(sub-wrestling) so should I use spikes. I do my sprints on running track. p.s. for this kind of training could I get any benefits of using blocks, now Im using standing starts.

I cant’ believe that you guys doing short sprints without spikes aren’t slipping all over the place!

The only thing I can think is perhaps you are popping stright up in which case you would end up in a very poor position for applying force and probably wouldn’t have very good times.

xlr8

I have noticed that I pop up pretty fast.
I just remember Charlie saying something about not getting up to sprint form before 30m and that only reason Ben got up earlier was his strenght.
Does this 30m meters apply with standing starts too or is it ok to get up little earlier?

P.S. and now some sauna and cold showers, benefits of living here is that allmost every house got their own sauna.

To touch on the nike/adidas issue, I see no problem with either brand, depending on the shoe. Nike has made some great spikes that I still use for practice(ie: Nike Zoom Fly). Really good, really supportive. I race in the old model adidas adistar sprints(model from 2 years ago) and I love them to death. Best spike i’ve ever worn. Really light, flexible enough for indoor turns and strong enough for good starts. Really snug on my feet and only 6.0 ounces.

But i def do agree that spike choice is definitely a personal preference. You’ve got to find something that works for you. Unfortunately, that usually means a lot of trial and error, and a lot of money.

How true JayRee
The problem with shoes generally is that each company believes the foot should be supported in a certain way, thus resulting in shoes from different companies feeling the complete opposite of each other when they’re designed to do the same job! What makes matters worse is that we all have different shaped feet too! :shoot:

Just had a major result  -
I got some Mizuno Chrono Dash for £100 £40 less than elsewhere
These things are so light and fit like a glove - very supportive & flexible too made the adidas powersprint seem like a pair of clogs

mizuno seem to be lite years ahead of the pack.nike adidas and so on a just following the japs technology

Gloop, did u buy the Chrono Dash spikes online? If so, where?

has anyone had any experiences with the ASICS CyberSprints? they are red, black, and gold. i am getting sick of my adidas adiStar Lightsprints.

up till march of this year i was wearing all asics gear and the cybersprints are great.not the litest but good fit/support

thanks x-man,
i weight about 217 lbs right now, so i’m not concerned with shoe weight, just looking for a solid spike. considering that my football spikes weigh around 10 oz anything less will do. thanks.
