Something I have been thinking about a lot lately is arm speed during accels. Also praticing the hand “flick” I nailed it a couple of times during my last speed workout and it really felt great. (exploded ahead and quickly increased cadence in the first couple of steps)
I am also doing all my accel work on the track or rubberized asphalt. I used to do it on grass but I think the problems with traction were detrimental and didn’t allow me to apply maximum force through the track.
One thing I often ponder about training acceleration is that no matter what you do the angle is never quite the same as when ur coming out of the blocks - even with falling starts , 3 points , or hills - resulting with what feels like an unnatural first few steps
I sometimes wonder if it’s worth using blocks at times when you wouldn’t usually ( like now - phase 1 ) - or would you end up with a huge front leg lol
I miss my blocks
I find that do some start work on a dry, hard sandy beach, measure out 10m, and you can really concentrate on how many strides you take in that 10m. work on different types of starts and see how many strides you do and compare. having someone there to time you would be great, or even video record you, but if not, counting the strides will be the only guage.
An athlete shouldn’t be counting anything it should just feel right.
The coach can use counting (by video) as a tool to issue a better cue that may correct a deficiency. The cue itself would never involve counting steps to at a certain meterage though. It’s not dressage.
Remember, your strength levels change. If you were to try for a constant x steps, then you will most likely start out reaching and then end up chopping… but above all, not really improving.
It is just a cue where you flick your lead hand up and back when you come out of the blocks. It helps accelerate your lead arm back. There is a great shot of Ben doing it here somewhere on the forum. Sorry if my description seems strange I’ll try and find the pic…
