How long does every one plan their training in advance?
I would be surprised if everyone makes detailed plans for their whole year in advance because of unforeseen problems, such as illness, injury/overtraining, stressful periods etc.
“Failing to plan is planning to fail.”
You simply have to make yearly plans in order to get all the elements lined up for peak performance when it matters. However, these plans must (as you point out) be more like roadmaps and have the flexibility to adjust when unforseen circumstances arise.

Quickazhell,
Im hoping you and some of the other members can help me out in my ideas on periodization. I like your plan alot, but to fit my needs Im wondering where to begin my GPP. My season and college career end in May and I hope to start trainig with Charlie’s methods as soon as possible. My question is what phase of training should I be in for the rest of the summer months? Should I begin my GPP in June and have it run fairly long until the fall or treat it as a competition phase. Just some background, Im 22 years of age and have been overtrained my whole athletic career. Right now there is huge room for improvement, ive never ran a 100, but Id guess and say I coud run maybe a 11.7 or so wiht my best 200 indoors being 25.(Only ran it twice). My biggest weakness is that I have horrible acceleration. Any thoughts?
Also Quick,
Im not too familir with periodization charts so can you tell what are the numbers 1-4 stand for in Bimotor and speed elements?
after your last comp. in may take 4 weeks off then around july run start a long gpp phase through fall. at first it may be a smart idea to train no more than 4 days a week.
my numbers 1-4 stands for focus. 1 being lowest and 4 being top priority.
if you really want to learn about periodization read "periodization-methodololgy by tudor bompa… and read “Peak When it counts” by freeman.
its important to know why you are doing certain things.
