Long to Short...

Can someone please post an overview of the Long to Short program and let me know which CF product best covers this training method.

Thanks

Vancouver '04 and Edmonton.

Both products show charts of SPPs in both L-to-S and S-to-L.

haha! I think he wanted free info?

I recently purchased both…they are very good.

Check out the med ball dwnload too.

Thanks for the replies. I actually have alot of the CF products and am actually looking for something specific, hence the request for the overview before I purchase it. Can someone provide an overview or link.

Thanks

Here is a review of the Van’04 download

And the edmonton

Long to short is basically the method of improving speed and speed endurance beginning at distances longer than the competitive distance and moving down towards competitive distances throughout the prep period. CF discusses these and explains the problems with this method if work isn’t redistributed thought the period. Without repeating the seminar word for word this is basically what it is all about.

Thanks! Which of the two is more comprehensive of the 2? My season starts in 4 weeks and after doing a 8 week GPP, I think I have to switch to L2S to prevent pulling a hamstring.

Thanks

For you the Edmonton spends more time explaining the sessions but both have merits. They are complementary. Look at the two reviews and decide.

Remember with L-S you have more chance of pulling anything later in the season rather than early on - it is swings and roundabouts.

And how long would it take for me to be able to download the product from the moment I bought it ? Hours, Days, Weeks?

Thanks

I am trying the l2s for many of my athletes this year. We do not have much access to training facilities other than concrete hallways and one thing CF pointed out was that if you athletes do not have access to physical therapy, L-S is probably a viable option.

Viable? So you mean to say the better of the two programs given the lack of recovery methods?

Thanks

P.S.-Is l2s done at full speed like s2l?

yes to both

Dido and thanks
I am probably not explaining this accurately but I believe the jist of it all is to consider the what recovery methods are available as well as what recovery methods your athletes (teenagers in my case) will actually use.
S-L has a higher occurence of HI int work so the athlete has to be true to rest and recovery methods. I thinkg L-S is a bit more forgiving and it allows you the chance to sift through athletes who would do better with S-L.
I prefer S-L but I also noticed many of my kids did not have adequate GPP and they just seem to hit a wall with the sprints in terms of performance.

Probably because you don’t back off enough. Hitting 3 Hi sessions a week for say 4 weeks will usually leave you flat. The Van graphs are only an indication of a program (for a very high level athlete) and unless you make changes based on what the athlete looks and feels like you will get flatness very quickly. This is where the art of coaching comes in - modify the program to the exact requirements of the athlete on that day and do it everyday.

how do you know when your feeling flat topcat? what if you do the 3-1-3 week scheme for 3 Hi session days of the week, would this suffice?

You’ll know. Performance drop off, lethargy, not wanting to train, etc… Some people probably can’t handle 3 HI sessions a week, so 2 may even suffice for lower level athletes until they start to advance.

Just listen to your body and don’t be afraid to back off or lessen the volume. Always better to do less then over do it and do something you can’t physically handle or are not ready for.

i find this interesting since i’m a low level athlete, and i can handle 3 hard sessions a week fairly well, thats not to say i’m not prone to overtraining. However i can survive. I always wondered this, since hard winter is coming along, i may drop to 2 days simply because i cant handle the cold 3 days straight.

I just bought the Edmonton 2007 video. Can anyone post any of the graphs for the L2S? As far as putting together a program it looks like I should have bought the other Edmonton video.

Thanks

Another question is that Charlie says that athletes can run 95% best time rather than 95% maximum effort. So on a S2L program, an athlete could do:

4x30m @ 95% best practice time
2x60m @ 95% best practice time

for a speed workout

so an athlete running a pb 30m @ 3.7sec would run them in 3.89sec
and running a pb 60m @ 7.0, a guy would run a 7.35?
Does that sound right?

As a coach you can see it and the times will fall or look like they are “too much effort”. I personally think 3 weeks high 1 week low is too much for most of the athletes I coach but it all depends on the level of conditioning and recovery methods used.
