Sub-optimal relatively to the magnitude of output required.
regarding they training program would be intersting to know who is using and who is employing different more classical methods.
For the former “bad form” excessive drop off % allowed btw reps and days of training could be guilty, for the latter could be a matteir of poor conditioning, unnatural technical model and wrong exercises, leading to ruin a more “natural” sprint tech.
I see. I am not sure if this is “excessive” (as in too much within a session, for example), as you described it in your previous post, but it seems to be “long-term” within a season in quite a few of the cases. This “conclusion” comes from the way certain coaches-that I am aware of- work in and specifically for 100 m. Others?
Exactly. By “excessive” I meant inadequate exposure over time, pointing out a possible unbalanced aspect of a potentially valid training approach.
As for too high knee lift this is an advice given to these athletes. Specific stretching and strength exercises including very deep squats alsosurely play a role.
As for DDR, training for men and women was not very different, the thing is that women react better than men to specific-training-at-all-cost. This has been verified in France and i think in Greece too.
Thanks PJ. Great definition and observation!
If this is true then why would that be?
Pierrejean, i saw Olu training for the Tsiklitiria in Agio Kosmas, under your supervidion :D.
Pierre, you look very young (i thought u were like 40 yrs old or sth)… Fasuba, is a freak of nature and will do more than fine :D.
i am greek too
Charlie described it in his “Speed Trap”, why Females respond better to supplementing with substances their bodies produce in much lower levels naturally…PJ is shipping very elegantly around the forbidden issue…
Secondly it is a social issue, too. Today (since the eastern block switched to Capitalism) for men there is a wider variety in sports they can make money in than for women (like soccer, icehockey).
That’s one reason why Russian girls absolutely rule female athletics today (except for short sprints and long distance running).
PJ, didn’t charlie stated elsewhere that hilla’s program were quite unorthodox compared to male programs?
Not so wrong - well not 10.8x, but I do not see the impressing performances in GRE, either:
Greek Champs 2006:
1 Anastasios Gousis 10.37 pb
2 Panayotis Sarris 10.43
3 Aristidis Petridis 10.57
4 Evaggelos Halastaras 10.62
5 Alexandros Genovelis 10.65
6 Christos Vassou 10.66
7 Konstantinos Vogiatzakis 10.67
8 Alexandros Kontzos 10.68
All time top ten (looks better, but comes from an aera gone):
10’’ 11. Pavlakakis Angelos, 02 Aug 97, Athens
10" 14. Gavelas Aris, 11 Sep 01, Tunis.
10’’ 14. Choidis Christoforos, 19 Jun 03, Plovdiv.
10’’ 15. Papadias Charalambos, 12 Sep 98, Johannesburg
10’’ 15. Genovelis Alexandros, 25 May 96, Rethymno
10’’ 15. Kenteris Constantinos, 23 Jun 01, Bremen
10’’ 16. Alexopoulos Alexis, 17 Jun 98, Athens
10" 17. Sarris Panayotis, 17 July 02, Rethymno.
10’’ 17. Theodoridis Georgios, 24 Aug, Paris
10’’ 19. Panayotopoulos Georgios, 01 Aug 98, Patra
I would say that women respond much better to consistency in training modalities in general. Comments?
PJ, what exactly do you mean by the following: “As for too high knee lift this is an advice given to these athletes. Specific stretching and strength exercises including very deep squats alsosurely play a role.”? Thanks!
You have the powers of observation of a great coach PJ is in fact 44 years old but he luxuriates in the trouble-free coaching of Olu and so in such a stress-free environment he has reversed the ageing process. Would you believe Charlie also is actually 79
PJ wrote in PM that Olu had “lost” his technical template for the start while in Greece, but no doubt PJ will help him to find it again. Maybe he left it at one of those wonderful Athens all-night bars
With the other half keeping a close eye I doubt that is the case!
Seriously though, looking forward to a trouble free (if such a thing exists  ) season -practically speaking at least… All the best to them!
Why dont you come and speak to us?
And Kitkat is right about my age, what he doesnt know is that Olu is so rich now that he paid me a lifting and all the chirurgical surgery to look forever young
Specific jump tests were done in GDR for both men and women including Hille group of course. Correlation with 100m time was very high for women while for men there was no corelation. The reasons given by AUT_71 have a great importance in women results, but for sprinting we should add that since women are running slower than men (biomotor, physiological considerations), the specific training doesnt challenge as much the sprint program as it does for men. A great French coach, fan of specific exercises, had Perec and Arron from 11.35 to 10.96 and 11.52 to 10.73 respectively, among others, but failed to produce sub 10.15 male sprinters in spite of many opportunities.
considering the slower speed, and higher contact time, could plyo exercises like alternate bounds and speed bounds be more suitable for the female?(also for lower qualification males)
pierre i was the guy helping Olu with the blocks!! ( i was putting resistance because they were sliding backwards)…
and i was very excited i met such an athlete…
I have trouble believing that their would be drastic differences between males and females in the need for specific training modalities. In my opinion a move away from the simplicity of most training will produce subpar performances.
Women are built for survival too, albeit, to a much lesser maximum capability. But I am just really having a hard time believing that women are that much different then men. A body is a body. There are more efficient ways to develop some individuals bodies than others. This difference is for the individual, not the gender.
Alos, we don’t know the situations of testing for these individuals. Psychological excitation alone may have thrown any test results off. I usually take “studies” with a grain of salt, yet read them often. Just my opinion.
Yes i think so, but the injury risk is the same whether you are man or woman.
OK! thanks for your help! Olu is so powerful that blocks slip 3 times out of 4 now.
And you can be awarded for helping Olu to break his PB at 120m last week!
About strength difference between men and women, quoting Charlie : “women can be 90% as strong as a man in the lower body and 65% as strong in the upper body.”
The situations for testing were extremely rigourous as any study coming from GDR. All athletes (about the national bests 50 male and 50 female sprinters) tested on the same days several times during the same year.
