Injury risks running 200/300 indoors?

Just curious as to what you consider the risk of injury running 200/300 indoors versus the 200 outdoors.

I am planning to compete at Masters in March and have been training consistently for the past several months. The majority of my training has been outdoors so far.

Is there something specific I can do in preperation for running the turns on an indoor track to help prevent injuries?

thanks for any advice!

Chris

If you’re running in the US, it is a great mondo track with banked turns and the only problem I had was coming of the bank onto a rather flat level straight kinda like stepping of a small curb. If you’re healthy, injury is not a big concern.

I’ll be running at York U most likely or UofT (Both in Toronto Ontario)

I am not sure if York is mondo or not but it is banked 200meter.

Just curious if there is specific prep work I can do to help keep my ankles/hips healthy running the turns. (I am tall and fairly heavy (193 pounds) so it takes a lot out of me on the turns.

In the indoor seaosn , I did alot of 300’s at York. Since your taller I’d probably go for the outermost lane. I had sore ankles after a while of doing lots fo 300’s and I’m only 5’9.

and York U. is not mondo btw. it’s chevron…if the spelling is correct.

Thanks Kweli. I should be able to train outdoors until well into the fall. Are you planning to run indoors? You had a great outdoor season!

I am for sure running the indoor seaosn. I just started my traing yesterday. I’m concentraiting on Strength Endurance and Strength this off season. I will be starting weights soon. I’d usuall say I can’t wait till indoors…but I can wait because i get three whole months to better my strength and stuff like that.

BIG THINGS coming this indoor season!!!

I’ll jog 6.8’s for 60m you can quote me if you’d like

hehe awesome

Good luck. I am shooting for low-mid 23 FAT indoors. No 60’s for me this year.

What did you do in your time off? just relaxed or did you train at all?

I worked and chilled with my friends. absolutely know training. It was a good break. started back yesterday…felt like garbage.

I’m also upping my workouts from 3 days a week (last year) to 5 days a week this year. If i want to make finals at senior nationals I have too.

Might be in the 200 indoors my pb is only 23.28…indoors. I guess I’m that garbage indoors then outdoors i run 21.73… go figure.

the year before I ran 24 flat indoors and 22.84…problems with those sharp turns

I dont see why it is so hard for some people indoors. I love indoors especially the 200. We dont have the 200 indoors in Louisiana but I ran it at the LSU indoor track for an indoor practice and we have the 4x200 relay.

ya i dunno. Maybe the spikes? or just the way they run. My friend runs exactly what he runs form indoor to outdoor. but for some reason I bust( get tired) in the last 50 whe running indoor … It’s so weird.

so wobley…you traing for the 400 … giving up on the 100 and 200. those are some really good times. i have a friend who ran 10.83 at the same age as you and now runs 10.4’s at 17.

but if the 400 is your thing DO DA DAMN THANG!!!

Im not giving up on the 100 & 200 I just want to bring that time down. I know that if that time goes down my 100 & 200 times will go down too. You probably get tired indoors in the last 50 because you dont have the same kind of endurance and strength you have outdoors. When outdoors comes you have been training since December (or atleast thats how it was for me last year) But you only train for a month or so with indoors. That’s why I have started training now.

I think it is hard to maintain speed on the turns especially on the inside lanes.

Also the bank screws me up too. I have to be careful I dont want to hurt anything for outdoors.

Be careful training 5 times a week. You had good PB’s this year and 3 days a week seemed to be going well. I would consider adding only one extra session and see how you feel. I have seen a ton of promising young sprinters burn out.

Cheers,
Chris

What are the embankment tracks like. I haven’t run on one yet and I am planning on going to NSIC.

The Amory, where NSIC is held. Is one of the fastest indoor 200m tracks in the States. I didn’t run the 200m there because I didn’t make the standard (it’s 22.5or something )

But when I went for a jog on it…I started to sweat. it felt like i was trying so hard but in actuality I wasn’t. It has a lot of bounce to it. but also gives on the embankment. Alot of people, when coming off the embankent in the 200m races, either wobbled or slowed down purposely.

I was also doing some speed sprints on the straight on the embankment…and I don’t think I have ever ran so fast In my life. Your going to like it I’m sure.

The times on it last year at the NSIC were 21.14 and 46.11…by reggie witherspoon,…he never ran that fast even outside.
the 60m track, which is situated in the middle is fast as well. I’d recommend when you go to find the best place to warm up…because it was diffilcult to find a warm up area with so many athletes.

Dont they have like 2 new areas where you can run now in the Armory. I heard something about them adding two straits with the hall of fame opening.

I think your right. they were doing some constructing when we were there. And tey have this cool warm up tunnel. So I guess they are finished the next track so it should be rdy for next year.

Well I cant wait to run on it. I was invited to Nike Indoor Classic but the records and the people and world class caliber athletes that are at the NSIC made me want to go there.

should run well. Just watch out for the Canadian guys! My friend should win the 60m next year.
