in the case i would be doing squats and deadlifts in the same day what should I do first

Charlie Francis, what do you think about deadlift and squat on the same day ?

In your case, split them up!

I am with David W on a couple of things. It has been my experience to do do one or the other. I like to do deads and front squats in the same cycle and squats with romanian dead on another. Train them as long as it takes to adapt or cease to make progress and move to the other pair. You could also do real Hack squats coupled with good mornings or lunges and partial deads. I have a reverse hyper machine which is pretty cool for the posterial chain if you have access to one. Look at Chris T’s training block cycles to know when to change exercise pairings or I like Charles Staley’s Escalating Density Training with sets of 3 at about 80-84% 1RM. Change up when your reps increase 5% on your reps. I think I saw where one of the Eastern block countries did this on a “light” day for their Olympic lifters. Sorry if I strayed too far from the subject. One more thing, if my memory serves me, any time that I tried to train both lifts in the same day, the form always deteriorated on the second lift. Also training too heavy, too frequently on the dead WILL overtrain you.

Front squats would be a good option to pair with deadlifts since they limit hip inclination and are therefore quad dominant.

I have found good improvements in pulling strength using (Sn) dead lifts at only 70-80% 3RM. Providing intensity remains in this range I see know harm in performing both exercises in one session. I do not recommend DL’s above 90% more than once a fortnight (month!)

David - did you ever buy the Bompa book you enquired about a few weeks ago?
(If so how did you find it?)

Personally I would do good mornings and other low back excerises instead of deads.
Deads maybe once every two weeks but otherwise powersnatch and powerclean.

Cheers,
Chris
