The weather was not very good. It was cool, but not the biggest issue.

I would completely ignore the wind readings, not saying they are wrong, but the wind was across field. In the 200m the first 100m would have been into a headwind.

Wind was also very gusty, and played havoc with all the events. Some good racing though.

Sprints.

Sally Pearson was dominate in the 200m, she also won the 100m but struggled to show her class due to wind.

Middle Distance

Tamsyn Lewis was at times 10+ metres behind and made a move up the back straight and hit the lead for the first time entering the home straight.

Field

Dale Stevenson threw his first 20m throw ever. Henry Frayne was possibly the pick of the athletes with a meet record and big pb of 16.91m

It seemed most 100m times in the A races were about .2-.3 seconds down on times

WELL, that went fast.

As quickly as Sally Pearson moves her feet, the Australian Athletics Tour dashed into Hobart and then moved on again. Its next stop will be the Melbourne Track Classic next Thursday.

Yet not too many dashed through the front gates of the Domain on Sunday. Despite the best efforts of organisers to ensure the ingredients for success were right, your average Tasmanian sports fan just didn’t turn up.

Sure, the weather wasn’t great but we all own jackets.

There were world champions, Olympic medallists, plenty of locals to cheer on and a lucrative prize pool.

However, if it weren’t for friends and family of the athletes competing, the line up for the espresso coffee van would not have existed.

If that is the best the Tasmanian public can do to support a major sporting event in Hobart, then it is no surprise we often miss out when major events are allocated to venues around the country.

It takes a lot of lobbying of national sporting associations, government bodies and convincing the main acts that we can deliver such large events.

Fortunately, the Briggs Athletics Classic has built several aspects on which to gauge its success, without having to rely on gate takings alone.

First of all, we had a bigger crowd than round one of the Australian Athletics Tour, held in Brisbane a week earlier.

In terms of development, the value is priceless. Facebook status updates from teenage athletes this week have been dominated by talk of attending the Briggs, with the vast majority of them able to line up in one of the biggest meets of the year in Australian athletics.

It’s not as if sports fans had anything else to attend on Sunday. There was some pre-season soccer, bowls and a bit of netball action but most cricket games were cancelled.

Media surrounding the event was bigger than ever, along with an advertising campaign.

Perhaps most sports fans are happy to get their dose of athletics once a year, when the World Championships, Olympics or Commonwealths Games is on TV.

Or perhaps that in itself is the problem: television and digital media options are so abundant these days that people would rather stay home and watch sport on TV from the comfort of their lounge than get out and see the real thing live.

What concerns me most, is that more people attended the meet in Hobart than Brisbane. I understand that Brisbane has had some serious weather issues lately but according to the 2006 census Brisbane had 1.76 million residents where as Hobart would be lucky to have 300,000.

I was at the meet in Hobart, as an invited guest as my work is an inspecies sponsor for the sport. The fact I am involved in the sport and had some involvement in coaching with a few of the local runners meant I loved it.

This was probably the best meet Hobart has had since Linford Christie, Seb Coe, Daley Thompson and John Regis were in town.

The staff of AT, and other organisers literally had 4 hours sleep Saturday as Hobart played host to Oceania 20km walk titles the night before.

There was next to no advertisement for the meet in Brisbane, and hardly anyone who doesn’t regularly visit the QLD Athletics site would have known about it. Also, the bigger the city the more other things there are to do on any given day.

True. Us T&F Hobartians complain about the media spending the majority of sports reporting on AFL, cricket and the International sport of the day and little on lesser known sports. Whether it is right or wrong is irrelevant. But the written news, only one newspaper in Hobart, gets behind the big T&F in Hobart every year.
