Distance jogging after cns taxing days?

Alright, spring break was last week and I went on vacation and went crazy and ate nothing but CRAP the entire week. I literally did not have 1 good meal the entire trip. As I am back home now, I am feeling the effects. I went for around a mile jog today at a reasonable speed and I was more tired then I would have hoped. The week before spring break a mile run would be a walk in the park for me, so im hoping its just a bad first run or something…but to my question…

Can I add a mile or so jog the day AFTER (rest day) cns taxing days such as my speed work or plyos? I am jogging the lost distance for two reasons. The first is to obviously keep my endurance up, and the second is my basketball coach is really trying to get us to run every day (we have workouts in the summer and he expects us to be in mile shape)and when basketball comes around, i gotta be in shape…I realize i should be doing some sort of tempo or something, but at this point it is not possible for me. I am just wondering if the mile jog would affect anything the day AFTER a cns day? Thanks.

Why would you run a mile for basketball? ugh

Dude a mile is nothing. I jog at least 1 mile as a warmup for both high and low intensity days (Although sometimes a bit less on low intensity).

delldell,
Like I said, I am not choosing to run this mile. Basketball is extremely important to me and we are having conditioning workouts twice a week this summer for the team. The coach insists on running distances up to 3 miles, it is not my choice. How we peform at these workouts in the summer alters our chances of making the team.

Alex, I know a mile is nothing…i was rushing when I made this post and said a mile…but it ranges anywhere from 1-3 miles. I was just wondering if it was alright to run a mile even if it is your off day.

I ball too. Running 3 miles has nothing to do with basketball. Your coach needs to care more about your skills then whether you can run sub 6 miles or whatever.

You get plenty of conditioning playing full court games. This is the same problem as with soccer players. You don’t need that much of an aerobic base. You need anaerobic endurance. Better conditioning would be some version of intensive tempo.

once again, i totally understand this…and that is why i have never ran over a mile in my life until this year, but making the team is more important to me then “what the proper way to condition” is…i need to be able to do what the COACH wants because thats who decides whether i make varsity or not

If the coach wants you to be able to run a good mile or 3, I’d do it. But running that mile the day after an intense speed day won’t do much for your endurance anyway. If you are running the mile close to pr, you are probably hurting your speed training and could be overtraining if it is suppose to be a tempo or off day. Are you doing track right now? If not, change your workout plan and incorporate some long runs in the morning or twice a week. A one mile run the day after you are tired from a CNS taxing day won’t improve your 3 mile performance at all. After making the team ask your coach how much running a good 3 mile helps in a game where you need sudden bursts of speed, a jumper and a good vertical. I suggest your coach start recruiting cross country runners for the basketball team.
