Decathlon training

Hi. I have been away for a while. I spent the fall and winter trying to learn enough to set up a decathlon program for my 16 year old son. So I backed off my program for him and let his coach work with him. I believe one of the knowledgeable coaches on this site suggested your run training would be like that of a 200m runner. At least once aweek he has been doing an extensive type tempo work out with the distances ranging fron 1000-1600 meters repeats.Does this make sense, should not all his tempo be intensive 10x100’s(do I have my terminolgy right). I am a litle confused. I need a little help. Thanks for your reply
