First off, who said they were new techniques?? Is that would I said? Secondly, if you new any professional athletes, they are on that website. I do get good results…. is that what you want to hear? Do I need to get into stats or times? Is that what this site is about? I am not trying to convince anyone to use these methods, what I am saying is that there are many ways to skin a cat. Are there a few people who know about training in this world, or are they just the people you know and come to believe in? Let me ask you this, when one of my athletes goes from being average to being a pretty good pro hockey player, should I get on this site and yell and scream about how good the program is? No, because there are just as many athletes from other programs who are doing the same thing. Why do we look to discredit? As for the videos, I tell you what if you could do half those exercises as just an example then you could talk about them. If all these exercise were perfect why would we train? It’s unbelievable how people can sit behind a computer and judge how good an athlete is by the way they perform an exercise. Maybe you should watch Ben doing a clean. You’d probably say he’s a terrible athlete. Right on! But he’s the fastest man in the world! No freak shows on that site huh? If you check out the girl on that site, you would be hard pressed to find someone with better numbers than her in any exercise of event for that matter. Sorry I fell into the trap of telling you how good she is. This isn’t the forum to do it on. It you want proof of athletes and freak show numbers just send me a private email and we can talk all day! (If that proves anything) Again, the program we use is irrelevant to argue, the drive home point is there are many ways to train, many ways to implement a belief system, and from this site we see many people who wish they could piece these things together. It’s easier for some to sit back and criticize than it is to try it themselves.
Does anybody remember DB Hammer’s 6 second maximum speed quote?
Wannagetfast,
I conclude that DB Hammer does not exist and that he is a created identity to sell consults or books. The content may be great but is it significantly better than many top end programs? I would conclude no.
Watching and reading everything on that site looks to be like a nice performance place with some good athletes but nothing that would shock a good performance guy.
If a program run by someone doesn’t work because the person did not implement it correctly what can we say about the application? If we all need DB Hammer secret decoder rings to run the program how the hell are less educated HS coaches going to do it? Many can’t teach a squat or deadlift with any ability.
What I see is a system that is very static and doesn’t allow for much hacking. I think a good program has a backbone with many ways to flesh it out but I see too much demand on numbers that can be tainted by real world variables.
When I see the top athletes in major sport dominating because of an unknown “coach” I will eat crow, but I still see hyper-talented athletes getting results with bread a butter programs. I know who worked with the top 10 throwers and jumpers and sprinters from WC and saw no DB Hammer influence. In fact the WR in the shot (Randy Barnes) cleaned, something that you wannaget fast claims is unproductive. I guess if he went and did a inno-sport program he would be tossing 80 feet? If I don’t do everything inno-sport tells me to a T the program fails and I am not comfortable with that. It’s like Alexander the Great dying of a misquito.
Answering in order
How would you conclude it is not better or as good as other programs?? Because there are no world champions that you know of??
Not getting anyone excited? Is that the goal of a sound practice to get you as a coach excited? I watched Charlie’s videos, I like them but I don’t go crazy over them. I see it’s the shock and Ah program that sells better. I see now. You are probably right here, no shockers
DB’s program has lots of back bone. Most of the exercises are basic exercises? Again you and I know its not the exercise that creates adaptations it’s the way it’s put together for the individual and when it is implemented that makes all the difference. As smart as I know you are Clemson, that wasn’t one of your better posts. Again, if you don’t like something don’t use it. Lots of different training strategies were rejected at first until more figured it out.
So rotating exercises like Bondrachuk is not relevant here for influence? I am not saying that it is inno-sport driven, but it’s a similarity like other programs. See, you see one part of it not the whole package. Do you really know everything about every program to be the judge? Drop offs are a mere piece to the huge puzzle. One way in which we force adaptations. Matter of fact I once received a program that had me training every day for 2 weeks straight. When I came out if it I was as strong as I have ever been. Come on Clemson you should no better than to say that. Why do people continue to consult with Charlie if every one knows exactly what he does? They don’t!! Only he can see what he sees???
As for cleans. Are you suggesting I do not do them or like them? No, I just say there are many ways in which to use other exercises to get what I need in terms of training goals. Out of all the pro hockey players I train, one can clean with any positive adaptations. Why waste time if I can do something else. I don’t have lots of time with them. Now if I had 3-4 months with them, then maybe it would find its way into my program more than it does now.
As for how hard the program is to follow?? Please no harder than any other program? If you want results shouldn’t we then follow things the way they were meant to be followed?? I see tons of questions about short to long programs on this site? Is that the sign of a poor program? Nope! Just people wanting clarification.
I just don’t understand all the negativity around the program?? We focus on raising force absorption ability so that you can feed it into the next phase which enhances your power absorption and power production abilities.
Is that that hard?
How would you conclude it is not better or as good as other programs?? Because there are no world champions that you know of??
List the elite that do them. I have never invented anything but use what I see works and is vailidated with science.
Feel free to answer your own question. Who are the elite? Viktoriya Rybalko speaks highly of you so I respect what you do.

So DB is real? Can I speak to him? Is he still sick? Is he alive?
I am not saying DB’s program has no back bone but it looks fairly rigid. More like an exoskeleton. It looks like more like a recipe than a cooking school. I have nothing against you Wannagetfast and know you do some great things in your area but I am speaking out of honesty. Share concepts not precriptions and I think people will be happy.
Dan, first you were on the Harvard(Peter Weyand) wagon telling elite coaches how to coach sprinters. Then you were a strong advocate for (Ben’s strength coach) John Davies. Now, you are DB’s biggest fan. What’s next?
I am a fan of what works my friend. I am also a fan of learning as you can see. Still follow Peter’s work that always comes full circle. Tell me the main difference between John Davies stuff and Charlie’s stuff please? No really tell me? They are the exact same thing (almost) you guys have said it your self; he took it from Charlie right? So, in following Johns stuff for a few years is that bad? In reality, he was more accessible than Charlie at the time. I don’t care who I learn from. I think that’s the problem with people and learning, their ego’s get in the way. If you look at my program it actually has lots of different influences. I just use what I see and learn. I told you every coach sees different things. You will see a little of Jay Schroeder’s stuff, DB’s stuff, Bondrachuk, Charlie’s stuff. All at different times depending on the athlete, the sport in question and other key ingredients. If you like Westside that’s great, but they don’t focus too much on the whole athlete. If you like Jay’s stuff, he doesn’t focus too much on sports skill stuff. So, if you are going to accuse me of following people (which quite frankly is a compliment in my opinion) then include Charlie, Louie Simmons, Bondrachuk, Mel Siff and a host of others. At least I do not rip off peoples stuff and claim it to be my own creation!! Clemson who influenced your training, your nutrition?? I imagine only one person correct? THEONE, I hope you are talking from designing your own stuff all by your self with no outside influence. If you are that perfect send me your beliefs and we can create an elite training system and I will not have to work any more. Thanks!! I will be waiting. As for me telling elite coaches how to coach…. please. I was relaying the information that I was lucky enough to be around! Take a look at the key concepts of that study. 1. We know we can all cycle are legs fast enough. It’s all about ground support forces! Hmm Charlie says the same thing. Don’t disrupt the natural spring. 2. the most important adjustment to the body’s spring system to accommodate higher stride frequencies is that leg spring becomes stiffer! My goals are to find what creates stiffer springs. Learn my friend, its not so bad. I know it hurts but you’ll get through it!
Clemson,
Shall I list the professional athletes that I train? I mean is that what you want? Now, let’s say I do list them (and you do recognize them), does that mean that the system is superior? I think not! If you want to see progress look at the high school kids in my program they were average to start out. Taking a professional (like the ones in my place) and making them better is really not all that its cracked up to be. I mean do you take credit for all the athletes’ success that you train on an elite level? Like the long jumper I train. If she goes 6.80 or 6.90 this year does this make me great?? Matter of fact, there is a very famous strength coach who works with a jumper. Quite a good jumper in fact. I wouldn’t follow what he does? Just because someone is fast or jumps far doesn’t mean they came from a good program! We had conversations earlier about kids going away to school and coming home slower. When they are there (at school) someone is copying what that kid does at that college and that is not what made him fast. The biggest trick in the book is to not get hooked on the same style of training. Since your body is adaptable you have to be flexible in your implementation of work. You have to be knowledgeable enough to change it for the better not for the worse!
The tools of DB’s training philospohy are:
1) Auto reg: A quantative way of measuring fatigue and a viable alternative to observation (which requires the skill of a good coach) electro analysis (which is expensive). As i said before this does not require excercises to be done in circuit fashion. Apart from pure weights session i wouldn’t circuit.
2) Exclusive focus: individual movement types are targeted exclusivly and are structured by contration type (concentric, isometric, plyometric or any combination), speed/resistance (speed, speed-strength, strength-speed, max strength), energy system (<6s, 6-10, 10-20, 20-30, >40). This does produce greater gains/time, in the types of strength trained.
3) Pre-requisites: Blocks are structured so that the following block will cause greater adaptations due to the strength qualities put in place in the last block. I.e. eccentrics - altitude landings - depth jumps - jumps.
All of these basic tools can be structured into a training week/programme however one wishses and any number of the tools used at any one period. I don’t think anyone can say that anyone of these tools, on their own, will not work so how can they just dismiss DB’s principals? (Even though they may not be “his” ideas “he” has put them in the spotlight.)
2 & 3 may be a round the houses route to an athletes destination but if there is enough time to implement it seems they are perfectly viable methods.
Alan.
Are you serious? One year out of high school I coached myself form 11.1ht to 10.67 fat. My jr. year in high school I coach my best friend from 21’ 4" to 23’ 7" in the long jump. My soph year in college I coached my girl friend now wife from 14.1 to 13.62 in the 100m hurdles and 25.74 to 24.4? in the 200m indoor.
Who the hell can’t help an average high school kid improve? You need to ask DB and John Davies for your money back.
I’m sorry but are you saying you’re a crap coach and you still got results
When I read books and articles I dont look for what someone has invented. I know most of the training protocols have been around for a long time. Their are different ways to design programs. Im not aware of any recipe book that will help you create champion. As individuals vary, so will results.
At this stage in my career I look at books/articles as a collection of training protocols / principles that a coach may have used with some or a collection of sttrategies that may at some time be benficial in some athletes plan.
Take for example Christian Thibaudeau’s books. As far as strength training is concerned it has generally every thing you need. I used it as a reference guide a for short reading material. But I dont recall Christiann claiming to discover or invent anything in that book. A great quick reference guide.
The Best Sports Book Ever ( DB Hammer-who ever it may be-I really dont care) discussed alot of things not touched in most books, which made it different.
Most books are really just reprints of something said ovber and over again. The Best Sports Book Ever was just abit different, but agin, nothing new to someone who has been around the block a few times.
Is their someone on this thread that has read the book in its entirety not been overly satisfied with this book? Likes/Dislikes.
And lets put aside the fact that DB Hammer is possibly a false name to the real author. We have gone their, lets talk about content.
I think we can learn from everyone, there is something interesting about DB stuff, although too overcomplicated in the language…The question is not if he is able to coach properly, but who he is and why he doesn’t show up.
I think too many people waste time focusing on this. Who cares. His (her?) book offers a collection of protocols/principals that would have to organized / sequenced to the individual. What so and so did with so and so wont work for most people because everyone is different.
Whats everyone going to do if DB hammer shows up anyways (shows up where)? He is apparently a made up person, sick, in Germany, In Arizona, Trained so and so in 19…the list goes on. Ill say it again, WHO CARES.
Who ever is behind the pen of DB Hammer has never said anything negative about any coach, and has published alot of free articles on the net, so he been generous with his time. I think with the articles on the net you probably dont even need to purchase the book, but even with free articles at everyones disposal you still have people behind computers cometing on something they wont even take the time to read. Sad.
Apparently the correct way to read the title of the book is: The Sports Book/ Best Training Ever!
It was confusing the first read through simply because of non-standard terminology. After several read throughs, notes taken, Kelly B’s basics, etc. I found the following points interesting if nothing else:
-
Appropriation of Weight (AW) Taking into account bodyweight or more specifically segments of the body as a factor of loading along with the implement being lifted. Maybe not new to some, but “DB” uses a formula to appropriate the correct weight for the particular exercise performed.
-
Different tests to determine speed, power, or strength dominance
-
His volume management system known as “autoregulatory training”.
-
Use of Oscillatory Isometrics
-
Use of other forms of Isometric work
Just some of the things I found interesting.
If you fail to see good things in peoples work, you will ultimately never reach where you want to be. Maybe in your case still in high school. DB is one of the first to try and tackle with different vocab what might really be going on in human movement. Does he use a different nomenclature??? Yes. If you truly think about it though, it makes sense. Forget the complex words and who he really is and look at the positives. We do know from lots of different readings that it’s not some fancy exercise that makes a program, its all about regulating volume at a specific level. A high level of stress turns the system off. It actually teaches the system to save enough on reserve in case the high stressor comes calling again. This allows us to survive in critical situations, but that’s not real good for performance gains is it? The AREG system tries to address this. Ask Charlie how many days it takes for someone to recover from a hard CNS day? Or for that matter a world record. Is it much different then DB’s auto regulated training? The major differences are the tempo sessions. DB’s answer would be the restorative warm up takes care of that. In any case, it’s a program that has helped many people reach their goals. Can you argue that? Charlie’s plan has helped many athletes reach their goals? Can you argue that? Nope just learn from it! THE ONE, justify your current means of controlling volume? How do you determine how many runs each athlete performs in practice? Does this change on a day to day basis or no? Why should there be static numbers for any training plan when the human system oscillates from day to day, training session to training session? Even Mel Siff and others on this site talk about perceived effort and how we feel daily (cybernetic periodization). These things all matter! Just because world class athlete X does Y volume does not mean that your younger athletes or even your other pros in your system need the same volume. One of the best lessons I learned from DB or who ever he may be is that there are no black and whites…everything is a shade of gray (a continuum if you will). I was also wondering if we should ask Bondrachuk (who is of course a terrible coach) why he rotates exercises in some phases of training. He must be full of #$^# to huh?
Seems as if most people took something positive from DB and his writings (they could have heard it before or it could be new to them). That’s all I am saying. If you learned one thing it’s well worth the read!
Just a note here re John Davies. Running someone in sand till they puke is not “my stuff”.
As for Weyand, the difference there is that he feels that nothing can be done technically to influence ground forces. While I agree DURING ground contact, it certainly IS possible to influence ground contact beforehand- if there’s a problem in the first place.
I’m sorry but are you saying you’re not able to but two and two together.
So Wannagetfast…can I talk to DB? I am sure you are good friends with him so can I talk to him? Maybe I just need to understand his system more? Could you email me his phone number? Why not upload his picture like you did with the late and great Mel?
People may flame me but when someone lies (makes up a fake history) how do we know their system is not a bunch of lies?
I think your missing the point and focusing on something that will be a waste of your own time.
You want to talk to DB? You want consultations onn his system? The fact that most of the coaches are charging in excess of $150 an hour ( I know one that says he charges 4600US an hour) makes this service unaccessable to most people, especially athletes who dont earn much.
What is it that your having trouble with? can you not put the peices of the puzzle to suit your needs. have you tried the methods in the book? have you read the book.
maybe you should contact the guys at Inno-Sport or just go to the sopposed source, Jay Shroeder.
On that note, a few months ago someone posted some training protocols that supposedly jay Shroeder uses. I have all of Shroeders books ( athletika International) and articles and can say that thse posts were false.
If I want to know something I usually go to the source, but because of $, that is not always possoble. So read the material, apply it, tweak it, and figure out if its worth doing again at another stage.
Then you always risk the fact that some coaches tease you with info so you end up with nothing. Thats why its best to research methods yourself.
Clem your so right my man!!
Wanna,
How come i cant talk to DB? What is is the big secret and why all the mumbo jumbo speak? I wouldnt even mention DB and Siff in the same sentence and if you go back and look into the supertraining archives Dr. Siff tears apart all the psuedo-scientific guru speak that DB loves to drop on everyone. His stuff may or may not work for some but why make up words?
On the other side of the coin, i can easily access charlie, see his DVD’s and contact him and usually get a real answer to my training questions.
I did two interns with Siff. He ripped apart alot of people.Thats the industry. Coaches always think their better than the next guy. Most coaches do talk bad about one another.
