Charlie: Scenario

Charlie or others,

I have a scenario I need help with.

Recreational sprinter, 26 yrs. old has upper level managerial job (stress), thoughts of competing for fun maybe, coaches himself.

Really no track experience 6 year wt. training age with only the last 1.5 year seriously training and only the last 6 months for speed/power.

Can only train one component per day. Track work, weights, or tempo once per day.

What would be your general guidelines on weekly arrangement of training components. I was thinking the following:

GPP:

Day 1 - accel/hills
Day 2 - weights total body
Day 3 - tempo
Day 4 - accel/in-outs
Day 5 - weights total body
Day 6 - tempo
Day 7 - off

SPP:

Day 1 - accel
Day 2 - weights total body
Day 3 - tempo
Day 4 - max velo (flying 20)
Day 5 - weights total body
Day 6 - tempo
Day 7 - off

COMP/Simulated Comp:

Day 1 - accel/max-vel
Day 2 - weights total body
Day 3 - tempo
Day 4 - accel/SE (120-150m)
Day 5 - weights total body
Day 6 - tempo
Day 7 - off

something like this if raced on Day 7, etc.:

Day 1 - accel/max-vel
Day 2 - weights total body
Day 3 - tempo
Day 4 - accel/SE (120-150m) low volume
Day 5 - tempo
Day 6 - off
Day 7 - race

Y’alls thoughts?

Brooke

Ok - some of the other guys will probably give you far better advice on the specifics of the various phases - however from reading just as far as your third line and glancing through your plan I’d say you may need to use more rest and recovery and aim to optimise your training - I would seriously think of adding in another ‘rest’ day where perhaps you could work on microstretching or something similar.

Jobs can be very stressful and this stress will affect your performances training etc. I would rather train less - but at a higher more effecient level rather than increase the stresses on my body and life as a whole …

That’s coming from someone who knows a little about job stress, study, glandular fever and sports performance …

No23,

Thanks for the insight. I will, however be honest, I train six days a week because I LIKE to. It’s my hobby and passion. I could trqain 7.

Brooke

Actually, it looks like a pretty reasonable plan to me. Basically, you are running 2x/week and lifting 2x/week. Normally, we do the running and lifting on the same day, but since you can’t the key will be to manage your volumes appropriately since you are doing two CNS days in a row.

Depending on your training background (it sounds like you already have a significant foundation for your weight training) you may be able to get away with less lifting especially in the comp period. Also, make sure to cycle your weight work in SPP.

Good luck and let us know how it goes!

XLR8,

By cycling weights do you mean specifically using Charlie’s 3-1-3 method as I assume?

By the way how has your experimentation with DB’s methods turned out?

Thanks,

Brooke

Charlie,

You got any insight here?

Thanks,

Brooke
