Are step runs considered to be tempo or speed

Should I run steps on speed days or tempo days.

do stadiums on tempo days.as far as i know stadiums are primarily used for fitness and to teach the athlete to land under and push

How often in the week?
You could start with them on a tempo day on Sat. IE
Mon Speed
Tues Tempo
Wed Speed End
Thurs Tempo
Fri Speed
Sat Stair or hill runs
If you were to extend them into Tues and Thurs, I’d use a very small number followed by a modified tempo session.

The fatiguing quads limit performance in stair runs unlike in sprinting where the hip extensors tire first. What would be the point in them?

I would also like to know that…is there anything to gain from doing stairs?

stadiums will have the same effect as hills.stadiums will teach the athlete to push while the foot in under the body.same as doing step ups in the gym but SS are done with greater speed.if done properly they are good

x-man, I would agree with you if they were done in a bounding fashion. To me there is too much movement around the knee to mimic anything done in sprinting. Maybe is good for teaching early acceleration.

THEONE,
you just hit it right on the head on your last post.

stadium stairs and hills and bounding are also used to improve top end speed. but you are right in regards to the early exceleration phase.

Think about the power and action of the back leg not just the front when going fast up the steps. they can teach a really good position and if attention is focussed on the extension phase at the back then there is reduced quad work and increased forward propulsion work - a bit like some bounding exercises.

On a vidclip i saw a HSI athlete walking (in fact, lunging with long steps/slowly) up the stadium steps. It was on one of the links that can be found in this forum.
It came under the drive thread, deffinately suggesting they are primarily used for the drive phase. There were a lot of steps, was done slowly in lunge fashion and the athlete was breathing heavy at the top so that particular exercise looked more like muscular endurance to me.

It’s just a small point - I far rather use hills for acceleration work - with hills you don’t have to concentrate on the foot fall or stride length meeting a step perfectly or tripping.

I agree I think steep hills would be of more benefit than stairs

Cheers,
Chris

Aren’t stadiums used to help with turnover and when bounding/lunging, or taking them more than 2 out of them used to help increase stride length? And what would be the problem with doing stadiums on Saturday with what Charlie had for a weekly schedule (the one I use) if you combine them with like GS work?

What I mean is maybe some kind of circuit of going up the stadiums real fast touching every step then coming back down and doing 10 squat jumps, then going back up and down, coming back down and doing 20 supermans or something? It wouldn’t be too hard on the CNS then would it? Or you could maybe do some high knees, calf jumps, lunging, etc. up the steps and all could be considered GS work. How about that?

I know hills are better for teaching high knees and what not but you could use stadiums for strength, too, and even get a little more technical on form.

Yes 400stud/Charlie I agree, if stairs are to done they shoud be done as part of circuit training on tempo days!
