Powell at the end of his 47.67 (400m personal best)
“I went out as planned, but I did not finish as I wanted to because when I got into the straight the wind was too strong,” Powell said. “The first 300m was the better part of the race,” he said.
although that play on words makes me chuckle, I generally feel sorry for MLF relfecting on his career. Imagine being told you could be the best at a young age and then just getting worse. He has been trying hard and cops so much shit. He needs to get out of the uk.
Wow I’ve never seen him strain so much. 47.67 is padestrian lol.
Whats ur pb?

dont be a smart ass. I like powell, one of my favourite runners. When u run 9.77/sub 20 47.67 is weak
I never asked you if he was your favourite runner or not. Shame on you for calling a 47.67 from a 100m specialist (not even a 100m/200m specialist yet) in January weak. Not even moderate, but weak. As a sprinter and someone who participates in this forum alot I really expected you to be less narrowminded than that
I think Powell ran 48.28 last year so maybe he gets a gold star for a PR.
Look at the great form: dorsiflexsion, shoulders down, relaxed…of the guy way in the back of that photo lol.
Franky, I’d be more concerned if there was a bigger change in his PB in this event because it might mean a shift in the trainig that brought him to where he is.
Well Powell did run 19.90 in his first and only 200m race last year and slowing down at that–something that took most of the “200m specialists” a few meets to get to. I think that shows he has plenty of spec. end. in his training beyond races.
I say hes my favourite because I have high expectations for him and high respect for his ability. I did not expect him to open with sub 46.00 but I would have thought 47.67 would not be such a deadly struggle for him wind or no wind. No offence taken btw
How far into the season does Powell compete in 400s?
Yes but when was that race ran? We must realise that this is the first month of the year.
He only runs one open race and one as a relay leg.
if opened with a struggling 11.02 in the 100m then i would be worried
What would be the concerns you have Charlie? Always interested to know what the big man has to say!
I guess the question is does the improvement come from general fitness and more effort during the race or from an improvement in SEII. If it is SEII then you have to ask youself what is being sacreficed to permit this… remember you only want to run 100m one time in 9.76 or better.
That training had changed from what brought him to where he is now. this 400 is just a normal progression of his trainng so I’d think training has been maintained as before.
Thanks Charlie. I’m curious to know if you would prescribe something like this to Asafa (I understand this maybe difficult to answer as you don’t know the complete components of his training) and would you have done the same for Ben or any of the other guys/gals in the squad. I know from reading Speed Trap that he stopped doing 300’s…
How about that visit to London… I still got that big pot of west indian soup waiting for you to eat while I pick your brains!
Some of our athletes, while training L to S did 400s in phase one (Angella 51.99 indoor).
My only comment about Asafa is relative to the consistency of his training. The higher the level, the more consistant you want everything to be so there’s no adaptation problems at all.
