I recently suffered a shoulder separation. Any ideas on how I can rehab and get back training. Is it wise to use a TENS unit? Muscle rubs? Massage therapy?
How long has it been since you separated it?
It’s a real separation and not a sprain?
I separated it on Monday…xrays and doc confirmed it Monday night…
Lo Hill, grade two seperation may take 4-6 weeks to get better. What sport do you play or are training for? TENS is usually not effective in this instance. Massage of the trapezius and posterior shoulder region are helpful as this area usually is in spasm. Stretching the trap and neck usually makes things feel better as well. Muscle rubs may also have an analgesic effect.
Keep it immobilized for much of the day. After a 5 days or so when pain decreases, cross friction over the ac joint along with gentle passive and active ROM. Scapula contractions and holds are very important and should be done all day long.
