While posting in another thread I reminded myself of something.
I noticed a while ago that if you double your 200pr you’ll get a time that seems like it should be a 350 time. Using Fredericks again…
19.68 x 2 = 39.36
Now if Fredericks were to do 2x350 in practice one day, would 39.36 be a logical target time? Maybe a tad faster? I remember reading that Carl Lewis ran some 350’s in 38xx. Which would be pretty much the same as Fredericks since it was hand timed.
Using MJ
19.32 x 2 = 38.64
Also, what are some of MJ’s times at 350m? 38, 39? Could this be tool that a coach uses to see if an athlete is on pace to run a certain time. Or in Practice used as a test. What are some other athletes 350m times during 400 races. Are they similar to what they would have to run during a Spec End workout.
Tommie Smith back in 1967 ran 44.5 and 44.8 in the 400m and 440y respectively. At that time, it was considered a special feat. Notice the dual string registerings for each distance.
Three days before the record assault, he ran two 350y Bud Winter tune-ups! The 1st was 33.5 followed by a 35.7.
Given that his 220y PR was 20.0, his 1st 220y split in the race was 21.7 and 33.5 @ 330y.
Those times would be too slow for SE. For guys like Butch Reynolds it would mean that they would only run around 41 seconds for 350m, which a 46 - 47 second runner should be able to manage quite comfortably.
Dazed, Ktolbert. I know the times are a little too slow for these guys. What I was sayin is that for certain workouts, would this be a logical guide for how fast they should go. For example I remember reading Clyde Hart saying before Atlanta, MJ ran 4 or 5x350. With all but one(42) being run in 44sec. And that was supposed to be a test workout. Now lets say he did 2x350 or 3x350. 37-38?

For guys like Butch I would use there 400m time get an estimate.
From what I’ve heard Quincy broke 38 seconds regularly in training in the lead up to the '92 olympics. I myself have run 39.5 in a set of 3x350m and am no where near the level of these guys.
MJ performed this work with exceptionally short recoveries, around 3 minutes (perhaps Athleticscoach could shed further light on this). Fortunately, so we don’t have to argue about this, MJ wrote what times he was running for 2x350m in 1996 in his training diary - parts of which were printed in Slaying the Dragon. He had his 2x350m as 41 and 42 seconds with 3 minutes recovery.
Dazed, I wasn’t arguing that these guys can’t or don’t run faster. I don’t doubt that MJ or any of these guys have run faster than the times I came up with. The whole point was seeing what the relation is. Does it have any merit. Is it worth doing basically. From what i’ve noticed the times are so close +/- 1.0 and have been right in the ballpark for what these guys were really running, i’m thinking it could used. How bout we say that the time should be used as minimum?
