i suspect i may have a stress fracture in my foot since i can’t really walk properly without sharp pains… seeing as how i won’t be able to run for a while i was wondering if there is any way i could still work on speed without running?
I was thinking maybe doing “sprints” on a stationary bike, or elliptical machine…would this be beneficial at all for speed??

im prety shure that no, the mechanics have NO corespondance whatsoever.
you sould rest your foot to stay healthy.
Maintain CNS reserves with benching and similar weight lifts and do some tempos to remain fit, eliptical would do fine since its non impact but the optimal would be pool work outs (you actually get to mimic running mechanics there…)
in any case, see it as an oportunity to work on your core and uper body strenght, do ALOT of rehab to straighten out any muscular imbalances, lots of streching etc.
well i’m just trying to have a cns stimulus, kinda like o-lifts (even though they don’t mimick running mechanics, yet many do them for speed develpoment) So you still think the bike “sprints” with full recoveries would be useless?
I don’t see Olympic lifts working well with a stress fracture in your foot. Just before I realized I had a stress fracture (the same workout it happened), I was doing Olympic lifts w/ about 30lbs less than normal because I just “couldn’t get the technique right”, while it was more like I couldn’t generate any power off of it.

i think that bike or elliptical would actually screw up your mechanics…they involve a large number of MU but are very strange to normal sprinting so if you train them alot you migh face a situation where you must first unlearn bicycling and then get into sprinting full speed.
you can have a CNS stimulus, just do heavy compound lifts that dont involve your injured leg you know? Bench-dip-pull ups those short of things, use bycicles and ellipticals for your tempos
Taking time off to rehab is not a bad thing. Put in perspective, many athletes get injured and have to take time off. Remember Michael Johnson suffered injuries in his freshman, sophmore and junior years of college that kept him from achieving his goals.
Get your foot checked out by a quality physician if you haven’t already.
i find it very hard to work on general fitness without running… i can run at tempo pace and still get the heart rate going, but when doing cardio on a bike or elliptical i find that i don’t get tired/my HR doesnt go up high enough UNLESS i start going fast enough for lactic acid to accumulate… which apparantly is a big no no… however seeing as how i can’5t sprint… do you think it would be ok for me to go this hard??
