Saw him run the 4x400 for Central HS (of Philly) at the 1986 (I think) Penn Relays.
Ran the second-fastest split of the Relays, high school or college, behind Roddie Haley of Arkansas.
Central finished second to Camperdown or Calabar, but Reed still ran a huge anchor leg. They were the fastest school in the country that year, I believe, and they didn’t really go four deep, at least compared to a lot of the top schools at the Penn Relays. The slower kids on the relay had a ton of pressure on them.
In the preliminary round (the only round before the final) he ran 3rd. He was listed as anchor, but the 3rd Central guy looked like he was shot out of a cannon as soon as he got the stick. And then the announcer yelled WILLIAM REED IS RUNNING THIRD, and there was a huge cheer.
Central was in a ton of trouble in the final, at least as far as winning was concerned, but with Reed anchoring, no one counted them out. He was maybe 30-40 yards back when he got the stick, made up half of it in half a lap, and then sort of stayed there.
