In 1 month, it’ll be my last year of HS. My problem is that I don’t know what event I should do.
Anyway, here’s my (kind of long) story:
In 5th grade, we had to run some short distances for PE. Nobody trained at that time, and I was no exception. My times were -
100 - 17 sec
200 - 39 sec
400 - 1:30
Over the next 3 years, I got a little interested in track, so I did train to run fast. The problem was that I didn’t know how. The only thing I did all year was run for 3-4 days a week. During those days, all I did was run (at most) 2 100’s, 1 200, and 1 400. At that time, I didn’t know what spikes or periodization were, and I had never been to a weight room. Just before reaching high school, my best times were:
100 - 12.8
200 - 26.4
400 - 60.4
I planned to continue training for the 100 in high school. However, my coach told me to focus on cross country and the 800/mile during track season, since I had, and still have, the body type of a distance runner. I was 5’6 and weighed 110 lbs. Before training, my mile time was 7:05, and over the next 3 years, I was running about 30 miles a week.
Unfortunately, I didn’t do well in the longer distances. I never ran under 20 minutes in the 3 mile, and my best mile time was slower than 5:30. My only decent times were the 400 (57.9), 600 (1:35), and 800 (2:16).
Due to budget problems and a lack of participation this year, many of our sports teams, including track, got cut. I don’t have a coach right now, and all I want to do is to run well at a few all-comers meets in winter and hopefully walk on to a D1 college track team.
The problem is, I don’t know which event is best for me. Any suggestions?
P.S. I wonder if those 30 miles a week for 3 years killed all my fast twitch muscles.
