hey guys, thats what Waldemar tells at CFTS. I got some important questions…
But here are the ideas first:
o COLD: ICE-Bath: 2-5min (until legs get “warm”, skin becomes rosa
effcts on muscle tonus
expansion of the vessels general effect on automatic nervous system
o heat (dry heat)
metabolic effect
circulation
o contrast-bath Warm water(38°-45°C /3min):
dilitation of the vessels
cold water(12°-16°C/30sec):
contracts blood vessels. prolonged application also triggers heat and should there for be avoided–> Dilitation caused by arteria, venes and capillaries while musle tonus isnt changed.
my queation/irritation is this:
if i am doing ice baths, the effects are described. Many people do it after speed work.
BUT: he describes that you should not do long applications at contrast baths, because it also triggers heat(which is not appriciated, because you change with warm water), but then he says that this heat-triggering hasnt effects on the tonus, but when doing ice baths it should have.
I dont get this. Is it because ice tubes are colder and longer or what is it?
So the feeling of “getting hot” must come in lets say 2mins cold whirlpool(after hot) faster than in ice tubes.
So my conclusion is this:
short treatments with cold contracts vessels and longer application(ice tubes) expands the vessels…
I hope some guys can help- maybe my english is just not good enough…
The reason why the application of cold would create heat is due to vaso-constriction. When you apply cold, the immediate reaction is vaso-constriction. After a few minutes, the flow of blood is constricted at the skin level, but the blood flow increases deeper below the skin surface in the area of cold application. If you are trying to control inflammation, this would not be desirable.
Ice is obviously very important for controlling inflammation. It controls swelling, thereby reducing stiffness. It also helps increase bloood flow deep in the tissue where many times the damage lies, helping to spped along the healing process. The reason why contrast baths work so well is by alternating heat and cold, you increase lymphatic drainage and venous return. This helps remove metabolic waste and toxins. Many of my athletes have used them and remarked at how much fresher they felt after speed work. Anything you can do to reduce recovery time is great.
I agree that contrast baths give the best of all worlds- relief from inflammation and increased circulation and removal of waste products regardless of duration.
