Timing of Deep Tissue Therapy

Hey everyone,

I have read much of Charlie’s materials on the timing of therapy, but I am somewhat perplexed by the way things are laid out still. Charlie recommends to not have deep tissue therapies the day before a high intensity session (ie max velocity work), which makes sense, but in a 3x a week set-up (MonWedFri), that would mean no deep tissue work outside of maybe Tuesday or Thursday mornings. Would it be okay to place deep tissue work on the evenings of a high speed session? For example, on Monday, after doing maybe 10x30m, plyos, and then weights in the afternoon, getting deep tissue work at 8pm and then going to bed. Or would it still be better to get work done on the tempo days (as Charlie recommends) in the evening?

What have people’s experiences here been and what are your recommendations?

Assuming the setup you talk about is 3 HI days (M,W,F) then option 1 would be Saturday post tempo with Sunday to recover then Tues & Thurs in that order. I am sure the reasoning is is the muscle tone post tempo is more suitable than after a HI session.

I agree Saturday would be best.

Thanks for the feedback. I agree and am going to try for this, but there is a therapist looking for experience, but recommended scheduling is on Monday and Wednesday evenings (hardest sprint session is on Wednesdays with Monday/Friday as supporting sessions). Maybe I could do these in addition to a Saturday session with another therapist?

I don’t like the idea of having yourself worked on by different people. For a week or more the body is adjusting to and recovering from the deep tissue done by the first person and the second person isn’t going to be able to adjust their work correctly to fit with the first person’s work as well as your workouts. Would you go to a different coach for one practice a week? Not unless they understand exactly what you’re doing otherwise – a tall order.

FWIW, this is why doctors prescribing PT often recommend someone they work with a lot – so they’re on the same page.

I don’t know what “deep tissue” therapists most people go to but in my experience, it shouldn’t be a huge shock to the system and should be well tolerated especially if you’re getting it semi-regularly. In my experience, the better the therapist, the less butchering/soreness will occur. Find someone who can work with the body instead of plowing through tissue and you won’t have to worry about recovering from your recovery. Doing it well can take longer but oh well…
