The training methods of Jon Edwards

I have posted captures of an article on the training of Jon Edwards triple jumper. I posted this because I was intrigued by the similarities in some of the approaches taken by Carl Johnson ( J Edwards coach) and Charlie’s methods.

Hi Martin,

I have heard “stories” about j.e. doing 150 cleans, and from these logs it seems plausible (out of comp). Not bad numbers considering his bodyweight, but his SLJ seems a little off given he is a jumper (3.15 max?? thats pretty average for a jump trained athlete isnt it?).

Thanks for posting this, mucho interesting!
Joe

A 3.15cm standing long jump was obviously good enough to become the greatest triple jumper ever! Highlights the rather weak relationship between standing long jump and triple jump performance.

Well it maybe due to co-ordination not doing the exercise in that manner that often…

Martin, do you have a link to the original PDF’s? Thanks.

YES thanks to Kitkat’s postings he provided the link. You can access the ENTIRE IAAF New Studies in Athletics archive here is the link

The elastic strength development of Jonathan Edwards year 1996 volume 11 issue 2

Hi Martin,

Yeah, highlights the difference between long/short power development. Obviously triple generates enormous forces in an instant, most good SLJ people I have seen use deep knee bends.

Was just surprised thats all, given his clean numbers. Id love to see how explosive his cleans were. Its too bad youtube wasnt more popular in 1995

Joe

There are as many differences as there are similarities? What key similarities would you highlight?

The use of strength training as a general load that will not affect the development of speed and power was the main similarity that I thought was pertinent. The realisation of both coaches that the opinions of their athletes count, example CF listened to Ben’s request to ditch 300m SE runs and Jon Edward’s dislike of any distance further than 200m was taken on board by Carl Johnson. The use of mainly 60m sprints to develop speed. Elements of bodyweight circuits as a feature. These are the few similarities that i hav noticed apart from those that i consider to be accidental…

Very explosive, very fast, both cleans and snatch. Trust me the programme Carl presented was not bogus. My squad work in the same gym that Jonathon worked in and we saw him lift on numerous occaisions. For his build and bodyweight he was a tremendous olympic lifter. As far as I know he probably didn’t do the SLJ that often which will most likely account for the low test score. His strength was his ability to maintain his speed throughout the 3 phases of the triple jump due to his fast contact with the track. He did something we all agree on - high quality low volume track sessions, maybe not with the really long recoveries advocated on this site but long enough in his case as acceleration was the main emphasis.

Hi Phil,

I can imagine how fast it was, given his tremendous power on the track. If you watch good (3.50+) SLJ guys, its deep knee bend, full flexion-> full extension… much slower than the triple/olympic variations.

I might have to put a force/velocity meter on some SLJs and compare, it would certainly be interesting to get some numbers looking at where SLJ stands in comparison to other lifts/sports from a power/velocity perspective.

Joe

We used to test the athletes at our are squads for force applied and contact times and height achieved on various jumps using a force mat. It was interesting that Jonathon did not have the best score on some of the tests. This was accredited to a junior long jumper who has not competed for a long time, both of them were pretty damn good though. This was prior to his world record year.

I agree and I also think it’s important to see what is emphasized in training and why. Compare this to the Russian approach.

From what I understand, his running long jump was not that spectacular either (have to check my biography on JE to see what it was). But I’m sure it wasn’t any further than 7.60m.

JE’s training shows us that some things he does are very specific, while other things (Olympic lifts - quite good for his body weight) are used for general stimulus, as Charlie has pointed out on numerous occasions.

Hi Phil,
care to share some examples? I would love to see some testing numbers of guys like JE.
Joe

Yes - I would be curious to see if his results (Ground Contact Time - GCT) were different over jumps that were more vertical in nature than horizontal in nature. I assume the long jumper would be better at converting to vertical, while JE would be better at maintaining velocity for horizontal jumps (bounds, hops over distance).

More interesting in his case, not just because he’s WR holder, but because he does less bounding, meaning that what he has in terms of abilities will be those most critical to the event itself.
