textbooks

not sure where to put this, hope this section is ok…

this week Im going to buy a couple of the recomended texts for my degree
just wondering if there are ‘better’ texts out there than what my course is recommending… they cost a bit so id rather buy a decent text that will last me a while, not just the 6 months of the subject, but make a nice addition to my library

Motor Control: Theory and Practical Applications: Anne Shumway-Cook, Marjorie H. Woollacott
any other texts on Motor control anyone can recommend?

Clinical Sports Medicine,Revised 2nd Edition: Peter Brukner, Karim Khan
any other sports med books anyone can recommend?

also looking for recs on a

decent neuroscience text (i have snell, but feel its a bit all over the place)
physiology text (i have tortora but heard there a loads of errors in it?)
med dictionary (stedmans?)

It depends what level you are on. Some texts are good for starting out in a subject, some are better for when you have more background.

For motor control, I like Motor Control and Learning, by Schmidt. The 4th edition was recently published. It offers a behavioral approach to motor learning and control in that it takes biopsychosocial factors into consideration as well as neurophysiological ones, etc. A holistic approach, if you will. This text is on a basic enough level for the undergraduate student, but I feel it offers far more than the motor control text I had in college as it is very broad in scope.

The Brukner/Khan text is outstanding. A useful adjunct, depending on what you’re after, may be Essentials of Musculoskeletal Care, put out by the AAOS. It is more ‘musculoskeletal medicine’ than true ‘sports medicine;’ the latter would include non-musculoskeletal sports injuries and go more towards the athlete than say, Joe Blow who comes in with a torn rotator cuff or knee OA.

Stedman’s is definitely the best medical dictionary. I have both the full-size and the concise version. I use the concise one more often; it contains 90% of the terms I look up.

Physiology - I’d recommend Guyton’s.

Neuroscience - I’d recommend Purves.
