A picture is worth a thousand words. “When the gun go, the race be over.”
Very interesting to check out everyone’s block settings for this race. Any comments? Ben and Desai had very different block spacings, yet they were the two best starters in this race.
nice pic!
Charlie, can you say why such a big difference between the two of them. Neither of them seem to be close to: two steps to the front and three to the back.
ben is on his second step when everyone is on their first. :borg:
is this from seoul?? Can’t be, which is it?
thanks
Seoul final… 9.79… Carl got whipped from start to finish…
Bens front foot is slightly more than 2 foot lengths back of the line- Desai slightly less (the photo is deceptive). note the block angles are higher on Ben’s blocks- this wouldn’t be possible if his front foot was any closer.
Everytime I see footage of Ben, I am blown away. That was some serious power. Where do you guys get the photos?
Bens back block also appears closer than ‘1 foot length’ from the front block. Allowed by Bens superior strength levels?

Awesome pic, thanks!
I was checking out their block settings myself. I have a few questions for you Charlie.
-
I notice every runners left foot is out front. Is there a reason for this or just a coincedence?
-
You mentioned something about Ben’s blocks being higher. What is the technical purpose of having the block angled higher or lower on each leg?

In my opinion, the men in lanes 1 and 2 look like they have horrible starting form. It looks as though they are bending to much at the waist instead of having a natural acceleration progression, which seems to cause them to have a bad start and poor acceleration. Is this a correct oberservation, or am I missing an important point?
It means you’ll never be a world-class sprinter if you don’t start with your left foot in front.

Most right-handers start with the left foot forward while most lefties (like me) start the other way. No difference. Just depends on if you have any lefties in the race.

Actually, Raymond Stewart in lane two became a superb starter. Just watch the 1991 World Championships. Stewart finished sixth in 9.96, but held the lead until about 70m when Burrell caught him, followed by the others. I really would like to see Stewart’s splits over the first 50 from that race.

Im going to be laughing about that one for some time.

You say MOST right handers start with their left foot in front. Why? Is this just a natural occurance with right handers or a biomechanical/physiological explanation for it?
I found charlies observation very interesting. I am righty though I start with my right foot foward, never thought of it as odd though. Its amazing they all had the left block foward. Such a great picture to look at.

Same with me doc. I also am a righty that starts with his left foot back. That’s why I’d like to know reasoning behind Charlie’s observation.
Im not saying he’s wrong Im just saying its intersting.
