During this summer we have AAU for the kids 8yrs to 18 years of age. I have the sprinter boys, girls. We Practice M-Thurs off Friday and meets are on Sat until an athlete qualifies to go further into the meets they will run during the week day . This is my format for now.
M- Sprints/Plyos
T- Tempo / Pushups , Situps, Med Balls
W- Special Endurance
T- Sprints
F- Rest
S- Meets
How about:
M-Tempo (for easing into training after a race),
T-Speed Endurance (or Special Endurance, if needed, depending on age and event, as this can also be represented by the event itself),
W-Tempo,
T-Speed work -with low volumes of plyos perhaps,
F-Rest, or light/short Tempo,
S-Race?
S-off, or light stretching, etc
I regard these to be enough for HS athletes; why would you prefer three track sessions during the week plus the race?
Also, Speed work after Special Endurance might cause problems…
We have athletes 14 18 years of age, I am helping the Head Coach as being and I managed to get one day off for rest and that was Friday. Sprints after Special endurance I agree may be a problem. I will go with Tempo Runs. On the Tempo runs I try to keep them below 350m , maybe 1 x 400 times varying for the individual. Special Endurance maybe be from 150 - 350. Sprints 4x30m, 3x40m, 2x60m, 1x80m. I have them do block starts 10-30m to watch them driving out of their blocks and watching their form. Is there anything else I could try instead of the things listed? Should I add or take away anything? Thanks for the reply…
I have quite a boys that wil run the 4x400 relay and a couple that will run the 400 individually. I have been getting comments that I am not running them enough. Especially on days that I have them do core work, pushups or even stairs. The other coaches have the 7 years old to 13 years and they run them 600,s 400,s 200,s I mean everyday it seems, its a little crazy, they are too small for that, but I just keep with what I am learning for you all and the kids that I have really like it because they are seeing results. I appreciate the help. Could you explain acceleration runs?
Herb might want to comment on this, but I would wait and see how and where these kids end up before changing anything in my programme… I bet your group will stay in sports and healthy for much longer, as they are enjoying themselves and improving; whether high performance will come at the same time later on, it’s a different matter, I suppose and it doesn’t depend entirely on you…
About the short/sprint work, for this age group the 60s and 80s may train other components vs. acceleration and top speed, components that lean more towards Speed Endurance. If a similar session, or the race itself follows after this, you are overtraining the same component ignoring, or at least undertraining others; that was just a point of mine.
It’s difficult I suppose to judge the entire programme by your original post only. However, for this age group this kind of volume, yes, might be a bit too much for some of the kids.
You may also want to keep in mind that the whole programme depends on their season schedule, too; for example, you might want to do some more training despite some racing going on at the same time, as you don’t really care about these and adjust accordingly before the important ones. It would be good to explain all these to the kids, too! They’ll understand and support each other in the group, I suppose -group dynamic.
Thanks for the reply… We Have a practice meet this weekend and next weekend , then the following weekend starts the qualifying rounds to qualify for further meets. The kids like what they are doing , not like school track, its specific to them not very broad and general like their school track is. I explain to them when we do a certain drill or run what is happening and what it is designed to do and they like that… I will monitor the volumes and not set them too high for them. Right now I see I am adjusting some every session, but it is getting tailored right o where they handle them…
We had our meet Saturday and its was hot and muggy, overall our team did pretty good, I had quite a few surprises I have a young lady she is 16 she ran 100m in 13.16 and the 200m in 29.82. A young man 17 years of age ran in the 100m - 11.5 , 200m - 23.5, another male 400m runner which ran 15 year old ran 53.74 and came in second and another 15 year old that ran the 100m came in 4th with 11.03 and ran the 200m came in 3rd with 24.3. The first two I am concerned with more than the others because they should be running alot faster for the competition they are up against. The others they need to also improve . It was a long meet what came be done for these kids when a meet is long and hot . We make sure they are hydrated and stay in the shade. What Kind of exercise can keep them fresh instead of sluggish when they run? Thanks
