Speed Reserves/Speed Endurance

Can someone who knows please elaborate on the following:

a) The difference between speed reserves and speed endurance (the concept, not the workout), and

b) Why, if I understand Charlie correctly, 100m speed is a far better predictor of 400m speed for a woman than for a man (or, at least, why women can’t be world class for 400m without being very fast for 100m, but the same does not hold true for men)?

SE for a 100m runner could be 120-150m runs at 95% and above done for a few quality reps.

Speed Reserve as it applies to team sports involves raising ones max veloicty and acceleration so that those speeds are not approached in sport therefore making the work more submaximal and less taxing.

Women tend to be able to double in the 100/400 quite well.

That is a workout done to improve SE; it is not the definition of SE, which I believe is the ability to sustain absolute max. speed.

Yes, but that is a corollary; I am looking for the reason.

Now that I remember more of what I think Charlie said, I believe it is because men do not have speed reserves during the 100m, and women do (women have a lower top speed, reach it earlier, and sustain it for less time, I believe).

Everyone has speed reserves during the 400m. Thus the women’s 100m is more similar to the women’s 400m than the men’s 100m is to the men’s 400m.

If anyone can add to or correct this, please do.

My understanding is;

Speed Reserve - is the difference between your maximum speed to the pace you run in the race (say 400m) If you have 2 in a 400m and 1 of them runs 200m in 22 seconds and the other in 21 seconds and they go through the first 200m in 23 seconds, the second athlete is less likely to struggle towards the end of the race.

Speed Endurance - is the ability to maintain or reduce the decreasing ability to maintain a fast speed past maximum speed.
