Snatch Grip Deadlifts

Ive read these are great for hamstring strength and speed…WHat are your thoughts on this lift and any tips on doing it?

Charles Poliquin uses this with his athletes. Try doing them standing on a podium to get greater range of motion.

If you use the wide grip and a step, then the range of motion is close to that of a full squat, but there seems to be a bit more lower back involvement. Also, you are probably working on starting strength more with the deadlifts.

I like the movement and use it once in a while, but overall I tend to use squats more regularly.

A while back I used to do em after full squats, and on a podium.
A week later I wondered why I was over-reaching :stuck_out_tongue:

High impact on the CNS.

I think the important thing with any deadlift is to keep the load to <80% 3RM and to work on maintaining correct form and accelerating off the floor. Using snatch deads immediately reduces loads anyway so CNS stress is less of an issue.

I often snatch deadlift at a weight around clean max. I’ve found it really helps strengthen both the first and 2nd pulls - due to the deeper start position and greater hamstring involvement respectively.

…They also help develop nice big traps - see CT article on T-mag

Do any of you guys use this lift with your sprinters?

What a coincidence. I just started incorperating snatch grip deads of a podium in todays morning session. I certainly felt it in the hamstrings and adductors, traps and lower back. However, what I didn’t like so much, is that for the rest of the day I lost some of the lordosis in my spine. The reaon for this was due to reaching and loosing the lordosis in your spine during sntach grip deads. Especially at the bottom position, where you are really leaning over your thighs. Could this be a problem for sprinting?

Bump.

What part of your season are you in?

This is pre-season for me. I start competing in May. (I’m ze European) I don’t like to do anything that takes anything out of my speed for more than 3 days at a time by that point. I like to feel ‘race ready’ a lot. Now I did 5 sets of 5 in today’s session, and I took 5 seconds to lower on the eccentric phase and accelerated with controll on the concentric. And this was several hours after some step ups. I had less enthusiasm for my track work after this, so I may need to make adjustments.
I decided to incorperate snatch deads of podium, because Charles Poliquin recomends them. He believes back and hamstrings to be so important, that he gives everyone of his new clients a ‘low score’ on hamstring and back strength when he analyzes them for the first time.
(Personally, I am undecided if snatch grip deads are good for a sprinter, and so I am looking forwards to yours and others’ opinion on them…)

No point in doing the tempo stuff that CP uses, I would probably save the snatch dl for gpp.

Funney I never feel snatch grip deadlifts in my hams, or deadlifts for that matter. People talk about snatch grip deads and deads being excellent for the hams but with me they are back exercises.

you’re not getting the hips low enough and getting the chest up.

The only exercise to rip calluses off my hands! I actually prefer snatch pulls.
