have any of you tried to get a good reaction of the start but running say 85-90% of your speed, then blast it 100% at the 15-20 meter mark or something to that effect? to prolong the acceleration to reach top speed alittle later, i was assuming some might of tried this or attempted atleast. I never tried it in race but in practice i did but not really sure as to how fast or slow it is. Suggestions?
if you go 85-90% you will not run close to your best.
I tried it in a 200m race once and was 20m down at 100! I clawed them back but still finished last!
Maybe 95% to start then 100%. I have told my guys to cool it at the start in the past with improved results.
The thing is when you tell someone to cool it they likely are running nearly as fast or maybe faster because of relaxation. When I ran my PRs my start felt slower relatively (both 100m and 200m), but still if you look at it on tape or who I was racing against, it was probably a PB or close to it.
like said, dont do in a race, but they are used in workouts, ie, easy hard easy, or hard easy hards.
Bad idea to run that slow. Just increase your stride length and make sure you’re not chopping your steps at the start and you’ll have plenty of energy to finish strong.
