Ok guys, what do you think of sledges/sleds and/or wheelbarrows as part of effective training stimulas for 40 yard to 100m sprints?
Obviously a lot of “conditioning” there, but most of us realize that actual strength and power improvements yield a much greater effect on speed. So, are the above actually usefull strength exercises?(For sprints).
Throw sleds into the search engine and you will find an extensive list of threads covering this topic as it has been discussed a number of times. Regarding wheelbarrows it sound like it would to cumbersome. Besides why would you want to use methods that further deviate from natural running (in this case acceleration) mechanics .
As the saying goes “Keep It Simple Stupid”…this line of thinking seems to work for me .

Thanks for the response but I’m not sure why you say acceleration mechanics. Wheelbarrow pushing is with a vertical torso. Are you saying that vertical forces are greater in accell phase and horizontal forces greater in peak velocity stage? If so, then I get your point. Thanks
Judging from your response I believe I may have a different idea of the needed body position. Nevertheless, going off of your explanation, the fact that the body is “upright” only makes me disagree with it further (for any use)…vertical forces are less while accell. and greater in peak velocity stage

I should of explained that I meant WALKING whilst pulling a sled (not RUNNING) whilst pulling a sled. … and certainly not running whilst pushing a wheelbarrow which would be impossible anyway, one would end up driving their knee in to the barrow and get no where.
WALKING whilst dragging a sled is often a method utilized by strongman competitors for exsample.
Wheel barrows and sleds are a really stupid idea and don’t belong anywhere in a sprinters training program.
The only thing that type of training will do is encourage the developement of a really strong core, in an isometric contraction mode…oh wait isn’t that exactly what a sprinter needs???
It’s not much different than squats or any other kind of weight training.

You’ve just made yourself look silly becuase you contradicted yuorself. Any training similar to other types of weight training can’t be stupid seeing as some methods of weight training are obviously very usefull. (u putt; “Any” other kind of weight training.) Which again, is bollocks, becuase there are so many differant types of weight training.
