That 200 by Powell looked rough, particularly in the 150-200 region. Hopefully, Yokohama will be less of a struggle.

Havent seen it. Should be a season PB though. I think he hit 20.5 earlier. What do you all think his potential is the 200m time wise anyways?

How did wallace beat gay? jesus…

Sanya sub11 in the 100m and Robles winning the hurdles! Some interesting events in China!

Is that another PR for Martin. Can’t remember what he ran at Osaka, but he is looking to break 20 soon.

he ran 20.06 in osaka

OOPS! It was def. a pr though, I remember that.

I know them 100m ladies were pissed that a damn 400 meter runner beat meet and ran a faster time than they have ever ran! LOL

Train slower to race faster.

That IS what it seems like. I guess sayna is making everyone pay cause she didnt get that 400 meter gold. Her and felix are way ahead of the world.

I don’t think I’d want to be Torri Edwards next year if Sanya keeps losing to Allyson in the 400 .

Possible explanation for the present situation:

In May of last year, Allyson got a fairly bad case of strep throat, and to make matters worse, she also strained her hammie. Made a mess of her early summer racing–went to Europe and finished DFL in a couple of races–and had to come home to train and build herself back up, and go back to Europe later in the summer to reclaim her #1 ranking in the 200.

So this year, Bobby Kersee made a big effort to make this a big year for Allyson leading into the Olympics next year. A LOT of special endurance. Training three times a week? Try three times A DAY some of the time. And all of this extra work paid off–in Sanya’s main event. Allyson only gained 0.01 in the 100, despite working on her start and acceleration, but in the 400, she improved her 400 time at Stockholm by 0.7 in ONE WEEK…and then in Osaka, she did it again.

Sanya–the opposite situation. She had her illness problem this year. Because of her 4th place finish, after nationals if not before, she was forced to work on her start and acceleration more because she know she would be running the 200 only in Osaka. And…Sanya got a big PB in the 100 (twice), just like Allyson in the 400.

Race-specific training works, which I think is the message Charlie’s been trying to send to Asafa.

And perhaps WHEN you plan to implement it as well.

smart post, food for thought

I think Asafa can double next year at the Olympics. The transition from 20.0 to 19.8, 19.6 wont be as hard for Asafa because of his 100m speed. He has more speed reserve in the 200m than any other sprinter on the planet.

Thoughts ?

My fear is we get another prolonged prep phase like this year. Best to win the 100 and worry about the 200 later.

Hard to say about the 200m.

The potential is there, but putting it all together in a multi-round situation (along with the 100m) would be a huge challenge.

This type of ‘strength’ is highly specific, only specific training & actual racing can reveal the athletes capacity. With the Olympics next year, I don’t think it is worth ‘testing the water’. After all - 100m WR at the OG > 100m & 200m - and probably much more achievable.

Maybe the risk would’nt be that great because the 100m is before the 200.

I know things went pear shaped after Soul but was setting 200m record ever a goal for Ben, epsecially immediately after 9.79 easing up.

From what I know it appears Gay’s training is more specifically geared to this kind of feat. If Asafa is struggling with 4 rounds at the WCs he’ll never be able to handle 1+2.
