Ross looks to bare bones

WHY THE HELL WAS ROSS RUNNING 120M GIFTS IN DEC WHEN HE WAS TRAINED TO RUN FAST OVER 60???

ADD THAT TO YOUR DECTECTIVE STORY

He wasnt ready and technically looked terrible over the last 40m. Flat footed and striking to far ahead of his COM. No suprise that in Canberra the last 40m looked bad again.

This looks to be heading towards another slanging match…

I read somewhere on this forum that his old coach was influenced by tellez, but as an athlete not a coach.

out of friendship he has to the guy who organised it and it was at his old club and he felt that he owed it to them to support the club and the sport…

i agreed providing there was no effort involved beyond 50m as thats where we were only out to at that point

prior to JR agreeing to appear, the event was not even mentioned in small print his appearance alone generated TV, radio and newspaper exposure for the League, carnival, the sponsors and other runners which as you will agree is much needed for the pro events in NSW

My fondest memory of sharmer:
Friday night at Homebush a few years ago. My friend and I accidentaly got in the way of someone videoing Sharmer while he was doing some runs. We apologised, but he was pissed off. About 20 min later was the 200m. Sharmer got in my heat, the lane outside me. Before the end of the bend I went past him. He promptly pulled up, and left the track.

Sometimes we all need to cheer up.

So, the information was available, the process was well considered and the parameters were strictly adhered to. Go to 60 and jog home.

Again, if you don’t know anything about the specifics of the program designed for Ross, you only make yourself look even more foolish by leaping in boots 'n all to criticise. Sharmer, I do love your passion though.

Sharmer Wrote: “10.8, 21.8, 46.8 - are good achievements with the level of athletes you have. I know Khemal would poach 10.8 juniors year after year. You may have the knowledge and skill to get guys running very fast but I don’t see it happening with the talent base you’re working with.”

I haven’t poached any of these athletes and work with what I can find and who decides to want to join us. I know you are not suggesting I have poached anyone, I am just writing that to put it on the record.

As for moving to Sydney? Firstly with a family of 5, I couldn’t afford to live there and coach to the level I do currently. Plus I enjoy the lifestyle in Adelaide and the ease of getting from A to B.

Anyway, it’s a pretty narrow minded view to think I would have to move to Sydney to have any ‘real’ success. Currently, there would be very few squads in Sydney with the depth & range of athletes that I have. In the national rankings last year my squad was ranked 2nd in the nation in terms of club teams for the 4 x 100m relay with its 41.78s. (I’m sure in SpeedTrap I read here CF felt the 4 x 100m was a good measure of your program because it represents the quality & depth of one’s athletes)

Understandably (because you have never seen our squad training) you have no idea what I have in my paddock - I have some quality kids coming through, but it take’s time. There’s some big things happening in Adelaide - watch this space.

As for this thread - I’m of the opinion that if Josh continues to run poorly, Nanny might have to one day just cut ties for his own peace of mind. It won’t do him or Josh any good to carry on ‘hoping’ it will work out. I have parted company with athletes because I quickly worked out it was not going to be a good career move to carry on with them. BUT it’s still early doors and Nanny simply hasn’t had enough time for any of us to judge how it will end up.

Maybe Tony Fairweather is the only bloke who truly understands Josh and what he needs. Tony said it took him a long time to work Josh out.

But just as I want Steffo to smash them when it counts I want Josh back running fast.

In an attempt to post something of value for nanny and team, I will offer my thought’s on the sample cycle outlined. I’f Josh’s head’s not in it at the moment there’s really not much you can do from a program point of View.
The speed volumes seem very low for a program with extensive tempo, I find that with three high intensity days you could be closer to 400-450m… of course this depends on individual tolerences which only you can determine, it also needs to take into consideration the lifting volumes, so if they are big then the low vol on the track may be ok.
I would also ask why included the boxing ect, it may be a good general means but I still think a mixture of tempo and MB ect may be a better option.
I wish you both the best of luck.

PS What sort of workloads was he doing with his original coach… is he a volume of internsity type animal.

It will be interesting to see what John’s doing. Where can I find it?

I spoke to John today about your question. He does know Paul and apologises for not replying to the email. Check your pm and you can call him.

Cheers

I actually think Pro-coaches are better than amateur ones in Oz. Barber and Gulliver are the top of my list.

Poaching is an unfortunate reality of coaching. I am sure you have quality juniors and talent in your squad. But over the last 10 years I can think of four or five 10.5 100m 18 yo in Sydney. And you just don’t see that in Adelaide.

Before the calf injury, Ross entered the Bay Sheffield and Burnie gift. So I don’t accept your justification for racing without being ready. I even spoke to Nanny about how Ross would meet everyone in NSW at better handicaps at the Bay or Burnie. The plan was to run at those events, providing the sponsors and handicapping were fair. However I didn’t know that his prep was designed for running up to 60m. It’s clear as mud. They made a mistake. You can’t expect to run a solid 120m on grass from a 60m preparation. I don’t see the big deal in accepting it. You think Charlie would get someone racing over 120m from a 60m prep?

Barber’s theory wasn’t really about low COM. It was about increasing contact length, to ^ time of force application. This argument from a purely mechanical perspective relates to all phases of the sprint. The problem with this theory is that if contact time is too long, elastic energy dissipates as heat. You can only pre-load for so long.

In a perfect world, an athlete prepares as he pleases - not as he must. Finances being what they were, extremely bad, I suggest the pro circuit was a timely cash-cow. They were happy to have him appear under any circumstances then, no matter what they may say now. Why do attack them when you just don’t know anything. Over and over and over again you leap upon assumption. This is poor practice for a supposed scientist

And this was well understood at the time by his contemporary coaches. There is theory and there is reality. Capobianco was an extraordinarily gifted all-round sprinter and it was so unnecessary for him to exit the way he sadly did just before Atlanta.

The evidence thus far leads us to one conclusion. JR has been disappointing and the coaching dept have failed to review each hiccup appropriately. Come on! I said the Mingara run was disappointing and the coaching dept dismissed my concerns. Based on his 60m split he would have run 10.2. They had enough evidence to know that they shouldn’t have run in Canberra. Yet they decided to push on.

I raised these concerns back in December and these questions were dismissed. You talk about Cappa’s disappointing exit. I don’t want to see JR go out the same way. Over the years too many talented guys have walked away from the sport before actualising their potential. If JR does, I won’t sit back and let the disaster unfold without referring to the "evidence" - and raise the question “What is going on here?”

I am not saying that Nanny won’t get Ross running fast, but you need to learn from your mistakes. And at least admit them.

My fondest memory of Sharmer:

I had the unfortunate experience doing the same degree and sharing many classes as Sharmer. He would typically sit at the front of the class and never had a notebook or textbook. Thought he was too smart, and he would argue for the sake of it on why the lecturers were wrong. Come exam time, he would walk out of 3 hour exams after 1 hour with a wry smile on his face, as if to say how dumb everyone else is. When the results would come, he would be the first to boast about how easy the exams were.

When I graduated I started working as a strength/conditioning coach at the NSWIS. On random visits Sharmer would walk in with John Steffenson. He would squat and deadlift over 200kg then walk over, running his mouth off on how he could be the number 1 middle weight lifter in the country. John would spend half the time flexing his abs in the mirror or flexing his biceps.

And Sharmer, you won’t be able to intimidate me with all the talk about your 10 different black belts. I am female, so unless you’re like your good mate, you won’t be able to verbally abuse me.

No surprise to see you’re good mates with John Steffenson. That’s two egos out of control.

Your just bitter that it took you 4 years to complete what I did in 2 year. And what I earn in 10 hours takes you 40 hrs. Glad too see you have moved on with your life.

No wonder so many people get down on themselves. Yes me and John clown around in the gym, being happy in life is no crime! its much better than being bitter, maybe you should try it .

While I’m sure we can go on insulting each other - and yes we all have flaws! I think maybe it’s time to move on with this.

I wish all the Ozzy sprinters luck and let’s get back to helping them make the Olympics through our support. Rather than thinking of ways to make sure this never happens!
