Ronaldo; How fast?!!!

I read this interview with Ronaldo on realmadrid.com, speaking on pre-season training, expectations for the coming season.

The interviewer asks Ron, about running 40metres in 3.88secs! Now i know he’s rapid and probs the fastest person ive ever seen in real life but thats surely impossible?

On Wednesday you recorded the best time in the speed test, 40 metres in three point eight eight seconds. Now nobody will be able to say you’re not on form!
If you ask any footballer, you´ll find that this is what we like least about football, but it´s something fundamental and important. Everyone has his playing characteristics and his physical form. The truth is that I suffer a lot when we have to do a series of 1,000 or 2,000 metres. It´s not my speciality, I´m not a player with a lot of aerobic capacity. On the other hand, on short distances that´s where I am best and show a big differnce from the rest. Everyone has to give the best of his strong points, and I´m trying to improve where I´m not good, which is in aerobic runs and also where I am good, perhaps in shorter distances at speed.

Surely there’s an error or do you think it could of been a flying start?

no way anyone is 3.88 in the 40m.

I’d believe 4.88 but 3.88  , must have been handtimed.

donovan said on a an interview while golfing that he did 3.78 at 40m. Still man ronaldo is goddamn fast in those short sprints, back in his hayday three oponents had a hard time taggin that cat.

Surely this is a flying 40m! In which case it is quite achievable but still very fast for a soccer player. My guess is that it is also a hand-time and flying hand times add an extra level of inaccuracy.

For comparison, Tim, Mo, Asafa and Ben (I’m sure others as well) ran sub 3.4s for 40m in the middle of their races.

Its like the theory put about in English newspapers years ago that former England Rugby Union wing Rory Underwood was faster that our own Ben Johnson, at their respective peaks over 30m!

I remember back in the mid/late 80’s a running back from Pitt (university of Pittsburgh) Lee McRay or Lee McNeil (something like that) clocked a 3.88 in the 40, but it was not only hand timed but also timed off movement. So if you consider human error- late timing after his initial movement and an early stopping, say when the crown of his head crossed the line, certainly a guy typically clocking in the 4.27/ 4.3’s could drop such a rediculous time.

i don’t believe in these time because:

  1. the last fast ronaldo was in 1997-1998. he was the Barry Sanders of soccer: never seen in this sport a man with his quickness, speed summed with his valuable technique: a freak of nature!)
ever since he had many injuries (many pulls and two ACL strains)
  2. i think it is a classical test over 30s and not 40s!!
  3. by now he is devoted only to orgies (unfortunately, i am not joking!!)
  4. 3"8 in 30s in Europe (ok, hand time) are time for serious and fast players, like Kaka (if we give credit to dates of Milan) and out for Ronie (Ronaldo’s nickname)

I know Ronaldinho and i can tell he is not capable of this time. He´s faster than other soccer players with same body weight but he can´t run 40 in sub 4 even flying he can´t do this.

Yeah u can tell ronaldinho is not that quick, he’s like maradona in the sense that his mind and body work quickly together. Whereas ronaldo is pure speed. How do you know that Ronaldinho cant run it that quick?

ronaldo is not ronaldihno
btw, ronaldinho his quick, not very fast
he puts together agility and a super tecnique and so he looks fast in the field
But in pure straigth runs he was never fast!

for example, in Italy there is a player, Christian Vieri (former forward in Inter’s, now in Milan- 2 of the best team of the world, of the same city) who has good time in 10s, 20s, 30s but in the field he looks slow, very slow (he has low quickness and bad tecnique)

In this years, in Europe, in strainght run, the faster player was Thierry Henry, Arsenal’s forward (former swing in Juventus Turin)

3"88 standing start is not that bad for a soccer palyer…it is usually 30 meters…usually top athletes run well below 3"50 on that test

top athlets in T or soccer player in the field?
i think these runs are made on grass

We used to do some shots togheter over the “hard sand” of the Copacana beach in Rio de Janeiro before Real Madrid phase and he was always defeated by the faster guys on his off season. Even in his prime he never did this, actualy, it´s hard to find a soccer player who can run more than 10 meters per second.

For the rest of the world, Ronaldo Gaúcho from Barcelona is called by Ronaldinho,
but here in Brasil, we know Ronaldo Nazario as Ronaldinho, not because of his size but because of his age when he was called by Parreira to play at 1994 World Cup Soccer in USA, he was 17y/o that year.
We use to call Ronaldo Gaúcho as Ronaldinho Gaúcho and Ronaldo Nazario as Ronaldinho.
Do you know Robinho ?

athletes in general, even 230 pouder bobsledder…however, in soccer there is a lot of variability in testing protocols…maybe the lightings more than 1 meter in front of the athlete…and so on…some players come here stating that they run 11"0 100 m, then in the last interviwe of the season become 10"6…or, others may state " i used to run 10, now iI run 11…" yes…it’s the same thing!!

we used to call Ronaldo (since many years) the former forward of Inter, now at Real (since 2002).
Unfortunately, i recall when Ronaldo (ronaldinho in that year?) was had up for the “selecao” and… that damned final in pasadena

With the sprinters in the 4.6s I can’t see any non sprinter faster than 4.9 on grass and from a three point start. At least he nobody claimed 4.5s!

Yeah, that´s the main problem concerning brazilian national championships and the star soccers we “export” to europe.
This year for example, Ronaldo just refuse to play the “Confederations Cup” in Deutschland,
for some period we brazilian thought we would not be able to get the 1st place without Ronaldo, but then, then Robinho and Adriano just came right on time to put Brazil on the spot again.
I believe we don´t need Ronaldo anymore, not on the field at least.

with respect… with Ronaldinho (Barcelona’s player!), Kaka and Adraino, anything is impossible for Brasilian team!

That´s a world of true vabo
