Is there any data out there that gives us what’s an excellent to poor timing score in this test?

yes tons, keep looking
Do you know of any sites?
Why 5 minutes between? Most I have seen is 1 minute to measure the drop off between the first and second
he right, 5mins.
Guys
Here are some 300 yard shuttle guidelines I’ve seen used, in both the 6x50 and 12x25 versions of the “test”.
5 total reps
OL/DL - make it in 1:10, rest 3:30 each
“skill” guys - make it in 1 minute, rest 3:00
Earlier this summer, we were doing this 1x/week, and our players adapted to this fairly quickly.
As the summer has progressed, we have switched over to a metabolic style of running/conditioning workout.
Even if the football coach decides to give the players this test, they will handle it rather easily…
Hope this helps!
What level football players? Do you think that pro hockey players can run it in less? ~50-55 secs.
The guidelines I typed are for NCAA DIII players. I will say this, though - I developed these times with the input of several DI S&C coaches, who were using times either exactly or very similar to this.
Some split the groups further; for example they have:
1 - OT/OG/DT
2- DE/TE
3 - LB/FB/QB/SS
4- WR/RB/other Db’s
There’s a bunch of ways to set this up…
Do I think pro (NHL?) hickey players can do this in 55 sec? Absolutely.
50 seconds might really be pushing it, especially with the 12x25 version of the test - that’s a lot of turns!
Thanks for your thoughts. That’s what I think - 50 seconds is pushing it. They would be NHL players.
Any one else have any thoughts?
We run the test on our track at 12 x 25m, with 1:30 rest periods in between, three times total. For our older hockey players (junior/NCAA/Pro), I would probably break it down like this (times are for all three runs):
Excellent: Sub 57
Good: 57-1:00
Average: 1:00-1:03
Needs Work: 1:03+
When I was playing football in college we ran the same test, with the same breaks (but it may have been 2:00 or 3:00) and if I remember correctly our goals were:
Skill: Sub 57
LB/RB: Sub 1:03
OL/DL: Sub 1:12
One of the guys I work with played ball at Utah when Joe Kenn was the strength coach, and they ran the test x5 with 3:00 rest in between. Their breakdown was:
Skill: Sub 57
LB/RB: Sub 1:00
OL/DL: Sub 1:12
He said that most of the OL/DL that were in shape would hit them in about 1:05 for all 5 - and we’re talking about 330 lbs+.
If your players are hitting them in around :55, they’re in pretty good shape. It’s also going to depend on the surface that you’re running them on. It’s way easier to decelerate and make the transition if you’re wearing cleats on turf/grass than when wearing flats on a track on court.
Do you find the times differ more when doing the 12x25 test as opposed to the 6x50 test? I have started to implement the 6x50 shuttle with my football guys and most of the skill players can make the time in 1:10 or less; I did have 3 players under 1 minute which was good, but I have only done it twice so far. I plan on using it more often here as camp comes nearer.
I’ve never used the 50m test set up, but would assume that the times would generally be faster, as there is less deceleration and transition with only 5 turns made, instead of 11.
Okay, thank you. Any reason why you prefer the 25m test over the 50m test?
(a) Because of the extra transition requirements.
(b) The track in our facility is only 35m long.
Not that there is a huge difference one way or the other - you’re still testing the same energy system.
Scott and Bill,
did you found any correlates of 300yard shuttles (best time, total time, fatigue index…) with other performance tests, like 30m run, beep test, yo-yo test, RSA tests, time motion analysis?
What does players says: are they feeling prepared in the game when they have improved 300yard times? what about qualitative assessment by the coach?

I’m on my way to vacation…I’ll ponder some of this while on the beach reading the new Bonderchuck book!
You lucky b… Enjoy your vacation and leave the book, rest your brain!
