Problem with running fast in races

I’m having a slight problem this year. I haven’t been able to apply my power correctly in my races. In practice, I’m able to run well for my standards, but everything goes south in the races. I’m sure the issue is mental, but does anyone have any tips to learn how to run well in races. Any help is greatly appreciated.


You’ve got to block out your competition since that is probably the mentality that troubles you in competitions. Just visualize yourself running by yourself like you are in practice. Sometimes competition makes you push too hard and you’ll lose your relaxation and tighten up and once you’ve tightened up you’re done.

If it’s not mental it could be warmup issues. Maybe you’re stretching too much before a competition or not stretching enough. If you’re running good in practice then that’s the same warmup you should be doing before a race.
