Powell out til June

If he fully tore it, then that could easily be responsible for a couple months. However, I keep reading strain/pull so I have no idea then.

It was probably that damn Inertial Impulse machine that Inno sport gave him http://www.impulsepower.com/sampleexercise.htm#shoulder10
(Please note that I am kidding)

My training partner pulled his pec last year on the bench. he was repping 225. He hurt it on number 9 but was able to get the last rep (he had to to get the bar off his chest. He was out for a week or two, but nothing that bad. I doubt asafa hurt himself that bad from the bench, I am with charlie I think there is more to this story.

Why do they all have to work out naked? Can’t afford clothes after the sessions?

A nude gym! What a great idea! Women only and i’m the owner!

in a article earlier on…it said that powell has “some” discomfort and nothing about it causing immense pain. Note this is first few days of the injury…causing him to pull out of the first relays before Penns. So how does some discomfort from a under 300 pound bench press (250ish) turn into something thats gonna put you out until nationals end of june!?

ben was not crazy, just arrogant like anybody on this board who has not gotten close to what ben did…

ASAFA IS A CIRCUS CLOWN
CIAO

maybe he hurt the shoulder doing bench press. Sometimes you can hurt it when your form goes and you bring the bar closer to above your chin(rather than above your pecs) to compensate by bringing the shoulders more into it. Have done this before and hurt the shoulder, couldn’t sprint for a couple weeks cause shoulder hurt near the end of arm-takeback.

Here’s the IAAF version of the story. The question here is whether Charlie’s going to need that drink before he reads this, or after…

Kingston, Jamaica - World 100m record holder Asafa Powell has been forced out of action for two months with a chest injury, but his management team remains hopeful that the set-back will not affect his overall 2008 plan.

Paul Doyle, Powell’s manager, confirmed that his athlete will not compete again until the Jamaican National Athletics Championships, to be held from 27-29 June in Kingston.

“The pectoral injury that he has is going to prevent him from doing intense training for a little while,” Doyle said.

“He pulled a muscle (pectoral) in his chest.”

Powell pulled out of last weekend’s Penn Relays with the injury. Powell will also be forced to miss competitions in Doha, Qatar, in May and in Oslo and Eugene, Oregon, in June.

But Doyle said missing these meets will not affect his plan. “I don’t think it is going to affect him much.”

“The important thing is the races between the Olympic Trials and the Olympics,” Doyle continued. “Those are the much more important races, so I don’t think this is going to have much impact on it at all. If anything, it might keep him a little fresher.”{I’m sure Charlie’s going to love that one.}

Doyle also said Powell, who won bronze at last year’s World Championships in Osaka, had earlier battled a knee injury.

“We think he needs to get more training in before he starts competing.” {There they go again…}

Powell, who lowered the World record to 9.74 in Rieti, Italy, last September just 14 days after his third place showing in Osaka, is currently doing rehab in Florida.

“He is doing rehab right now but he will be back in training, fully, in about a week,” Doyle said.

This eliminates 2 of the 4 GL meets before the Olympics. But this year, Zurich comes exactly 13 days after the OG 100m final, which appears to fit his established peaking plan perfectly.

Tysonphobia.

Well, I’m ready for that drink now!
Doyle really does know how to put lipstick on a pig.

Lipstick on a pig … now there’s a new one!

I find the whole thing a little errie … I’d be surprised if there isn’t more to this story.

Well I’m not buying the BP story but whatever- let’s hope he can recover soon!!

From what I’ve been told Asafa (and Wariner) will “never compete at Zurich again”. Note neither ran there last year. I was told it was some sort of financial insult from the Zurich organisers…then again, business is business and if the money is too good to refuse I’m sure Asafa’s men will recover from the insult.

Nothing more irritating than a sanctimonious whore, or a meet promoter (is there a difference?).
Fortunately, the athlete’s superpowers rarely include pride and if there’s enough money on the line…

Im definitely expecting a 9.6 right after the olympics…man powells gonna be the biggest joke sprinter of all time

KINGSTON, April 29 AFP - World 100 metres record holder Asafa Powell will be out of competition until the end of June after sustaining a chest muscle injury in training, but should be back working out within another week.
Paul Doyle, manager for the Jamaican sprint star, said today that the chest strain is responding well to treatment in Florida after an injury suffered while lifting weights.
I just spoke to the doctor and everything is going well with Asafa,'' Doyle said. Rehab is going very well. He will be back in training in no time… He will be able to resume full training probably next week.‘’
Powell will not compete again until the Jamaican National Olympic trials June 27-29.
It doesn't make sense to get right back into competition now,'' Doyle said. He needs to get back into a bit of training and ready to compete at the trials and then post-trials before the Olympics.
The big picture this year is winning the Olympic Games so that's all we are looking to do - give Asafa the best possible chance of that. And we feel for him not to compete before the trials is the best way to prepare him for the Olympics.‘’
Powell had been due to compete in last week’s Penn Relays in the United States, but the injury forced him to withdraw.
He will also be unable to race as planned in Doha on May 9, Berlin on June 1 and Oslo on June 6.
He (Powell) pulled a pectoral muscle in his chest while bench pressing a while ago,'' Doyle said. The muscle is torn, but it’s not a huge deal.
``It’s not like a power muscle for running, but it still active when he swings his arms. So he is going to have to have period of time when he is not able to train fully.‘’
Powell set the world 100m record at 9.74 seconds in Italy last September.

apparently powell and gay will race at crystal palace before the olympics.

I know how they can help Powell, they can set it up like the Tour de France, a series of time trials and races where the lowest cume time wins.

Only improvement I expect from Powell will be 2nd place this time, because he will not put his head down and slow down like lasy year, instead lose like a man. Just my expectation.

Under the heading: It’s hard to make things foolproof cause fools are so ingenious.
Heard more about the injury. According to some of the Jamaican guys at Penn, who say they were there, Asafa was doing negatives on the bench with slow drops and pauses with a weight above his max (didn’t hear how much) This is supposedly what caused the tear. Wonder whose brilliant idea that was???
Does this kind of training philosophy sound familiar?
