Powell out til June

SALVO, North Carolina, April 28 (Reuters) - Jamaican 100 metres world record holder Asafa Powell has cancelled plans to compete until late June because of a pulled muscle in his chest, his manager told Reuters on Monday.
The move is precautionary and is not expected to affect the Jamaican’s preparations for the Beijing Olympics in August, Paul Doyle told Reuters in a telephone interview from his home in Atlanta.
“We don’t expect there is anything to be concerned about beyond the end of June,” Doyle said.
Powell will miss competitions in Doha, Oslo and Eugene, Oregon, as he recovered, Doyle said.
His first race back is expected to be the Jamaican championships in late June.

he can kiss beijing gold good bye

he’ll get in…3-4 meets before beijing?? He’s probably due for a 9.6 this year…mid september! Tyson Gay is definitenly playing his game much better, and I give him 60-70% chance to win.

I’m very curious about this injury. In 25 years, I never had an injury from the BP with athletes lifting far more than we’ve seen Asafa lift. I have however seen injuries with intense med ball throws from the knees against a wall, later blamed on the BP to deflect blame from the real cause. I have not seen this exercise in Asafa’s training and I’m wondering if anyone else has become involved in administering workouts? Does anyone know?

Ya it is a little strange to have a chest injury with the relatively light loads that he was using on the bench. The only torn pec I’ve ever seen was by my roommate when he was working with 400 lbs.

Im also REALLY curious…what type of friggin pec injury costs you a couple months worth of meets?!?

Powell isnt even at 300 yet…I dont understand the actual point of anything though…does he WANT to lose to tyson gay?

I heard yesterday that he had surgery but haven’t had any confirmation.

wow. well either way if he’s not running the meets…he wont be ready to face tyson gay, and a basic repeat of last year, except i dont think he’ll slow down and panic…he’ll just lose like a man and lose cleanly.

Dont “believe the hype”, powell is playing games with you guys.

only one Games that count this year … hope safa’s not jeopardising his chances by “playing games” with whomever he may think he’s playing those games with. I’m pretty sure Gay isn’t participating in such games, just getting on with justifiying his favourite’s tag for Beijing.

Most Americans that I have come across think Gay is virtually unbeatable come the OG.

I’m as confused as you are. I’ve heard of people getting injured during dumbell press, or flys, but bench press never.

My main concern is how will the plan change as far as being sharp enough to take the gold come the Olympics. If he’s going to be out until June, then that means no racing in May when he’s already missed all of April. Is he able to come back sooner, and June is just a precautionary measure?

What can he do different that would get him prepared physically and mentally despite not racing enough? Should the training accomodate the missing races, or should they continue on. I remember reading Clyde Hart say that he put MJ on a workout regime prior to(forgot which major meet)that got him in shape quick since he had just come off an injury. With the 100m it’s a bit more risky to maybe up the intensity, volume, etc but could that be a presription?

He’s missed Mt. Sac, Penn Relays, and will now miss miss Doha, Pre, Berlin, & Oslo. I believe that’s a total of 8 races including prelims. All of which would have been extremely beneficial as far as preparation. How do you replace 8 races?

The “good” news is that he will be able to do bounding, leg work and jumps until his shoulder is fixed. Ben came back from a hamstring tear to win the OGs so I’m sure Asafa can.

We will see everything soon enough. There’s always more there than meets the eye. We all know it can’t be just from the bench press, so there’s something else there. Not sure what it is though…

Yeah but Ben was crazy in his head…
Asafa isn’t…
maaan i don’t like this

Ben also won the worlds a year before…asafa not only lost…but slowed down before the end.

With a pectoral tear, and especially if there has been any kind of surgery, there will definitely not be any bounding or jumping for quite a while.

Yep…i agree…when I strained my pec back in my body building days (please note this was when I was lifting 140-155kg!!) and doing flys with mad weights I couldnt do much…movement caused discomfort. Bounding/jumps which require the arms to pull back and go forward would recruit/stretch the pec fibres to a small degree…unless he plans on jumping without using his arms to generate force.

Not good news for him at all. He knows nows (should know) that he needs X amount of races to run fast based on the analysis that would have been submitted to Doyle. Time is the master…we’ll see.

Exactly my question since Stephen Francis seemed surprised to hear about it. I want to know if someone else has gotten involved.

Maybe Gambetta has
