Pain in the GPP

I want to check if anyone following the GPP have a similar situation. My athletes follow the GPP pretty much as it is on the DVD. We are in week 6 now and I noticed something very interesting: they all get stiff and sore in exactly the same places. Those places being:

  • Gluteus Medius
  • Sartorius (towards the knee)
  • Vastus Medialis (Internus)
  • Vastus Lateralis (Externus)
  • Groin

They recover well after a tempo day, but it is interesting that all of them have exactly the same pain in the same places.

What are their recovery methods? Any massage or self-massage?

You can’t really expect to perform at a high level without optimal recovery methods. This includes being injury free. I can hit almost ever muscle in my lower body with a foam roller and self-myfacial release techniques but I still get massages regularly. If you have the money, lay it down otherwise use the next best thing.

Hi a Blinky,

I do a light rubdown on the low intensity days. So they get one just about every second day, and I send them to a alignment specialist once every two weeks.

They recover well, the pain and stiffness dissapears after 48 hours. Its just strange to have a group that all complain about exactly the same things.

Have these athletes been training previous to your 6 week implementation? or did they just jump into running? With everything, changes should be gradual… whether it be changes in volume, exercises or nature of the work. You also have to constantly monitor your athletes and you CANNOT conform to a strict template. Use the GPP DVD as a guideline, not something that is set in stone. If your athletes need another day or two off for stiffness to subside then that has to be allowed.
