KK,

Whats the plan for the boys now? It had to have been a great overall experience for them.

Someone has to be a little red faced kk they got no times in the 200m…

An absolute disgrace that the timing failed. Its 2012 and that embarressing scenario occurs at an Olympic trials. Here they are expecting athletes to turn up be ready to go in ordinary conditions at ridiculous times and then they can’t even get the timing to work!! The young kid who won most definitely ran a B and quite possibly an A. If it had been the women’s 200m it would have been front page material instead it has simply been pushed aside. On a positive note the two QLD boys who were first and 3rd represent an exciting new breed of 200m specialist who will hopefully start filling the void in that events for the Aussie men’s sprinters. great job to them and their coaches and let’s hope the young fella who won runs a qualifier in the next few months and makes the team.

It gets even better…

“Jake Hammond, AUS, 10.59”

I’ve had some very interesting conversations with this guys coach.

also, didn’t josh ross retire from athletics? or is this that other josh ross I have heard about vaguely??

Jake’s coach is a great believer in Charlie’s coaching systems and concepts.
Josh Ross changes direction like he changes his underwear, frequently. He did go to the US to have a go at making an NFL team through the draft (?) but then returned to Australia. He’s attracted some headlines but has not run much better than 10.5 so far this Oz summer. But he’s trimming down and he is a really nice guy, if a bit of a wanderer.

Plan is the same for every sprinter in Australia except for Sally Pearson: keep on competing through to the Ausdtralian national championships in mid-April. Unfortunately the nationals are also in Melbourne where by mid-April the weather can be very cold and pretty feral - gee, come to think of it, just like it was at the Trials last weekend!

There will definitely be a men’s 4x4 relay team nominated for London to the Australian Olympic Committee whose team it ultimately is. The AOC will decide on the way they see the merits as to whether to endorse Athletics Australia’s nominations to the relay. But the selectors did not name anyone to the relay - not even John Steffensen, the only man to date with even an Olympic B-qualifying time to his credit. The selecftors will meet again on June 7 to reflect on performances at the Nationals and presumably then will name names. Therefore the only option is for Olympic hopefuls to reload and reset for the run up to the Nationals and hope that, without the artificial and inappropriate constrictions of having to compete in three obligatory meets (Adelaide, Perth & Sydney, plus the Trials in Melbourne) they and their coaches can properly plan to train and race when it suits the individual. One thing though is that they dare not leave their qualifying time effort for the Nationals due to the likely poor weather conditions. They need to regroup and take a crack at a fast one within the coming four weeks, imho.

Can relays be nominated if their participation is based on a top 16 ranking at the beginning of July and / or the IAAF cut off? Or can a team be nominated subject to be in the top 16 at the cut off period.

Really? I was under the impression he uses high volumes of intensive tempo with junior sprinters. He has produced a substantial number of very fast junior sprinters (for Australian standards), but none of them ever seems to improve much beyond the age of 18 or so. Hornblower, what do you know about his coaching methods?

KK, any feeling for why there has been such a drop off in standard this year in the 400m in Oz? It seems all the top men are way off their pbs…

yes, and he had quite a bit of one on one time with him. the good thing is that jake himself is a great believer in his coach, even if many in the establishment aren’t…

ah, yes. I never did get back to you on that one, did I?

I get the impression that the other coach at that club tends to use high volumes of intensive tempo, from speaking to a couple of the younger guys there. jake’s coach is very much on the CF method. when he told another coach about how he trained his young athletes to be so successful the response was “if you don’t want to tell me, then don’t tell me. just don’t bulls**t me!”, and he walked off!

he’s had success at junior level and masters (ernie is a speedster and rarely runs further than 80m at training), but not quite in between yet. he’s invested a lot in jake, so hopefully he can be a bit of a trailblazer for him. there’s another kid in his stable not too far behind, though. a couple of years younger but also putting up some great times for a youngster…

Mens 5km has some serious depth in that race.
David pushed the guys to a decient 800m time
