No peek drive phase

I ran approximately 20 races this year and trained from August to July. Yet in every one of my races (100’s and 200’s) I’m looking around after my 1st step out of the blocks. I never look in practice, even with partners, but in the race I look and have mediocre drive.
Does anyone have tools or tricks to help me.

looking up isn’t a problem (see owens, b. johnson, flojo), but coming upright too early is a problem. A lot of people focus on keeping their head down and they end up making the situation even worse. You should gradually go upright from the blocks, but your head is generally best if it remains in a neutral position.

whatever you do in practice do completely the same in a meet.the whole point of training is not only to condition but its rehearsel also.so my point is …whatever you do in training do in a comp.no difference whatsoever! warm-up the same and think the same

the head follows the eyes and the body the head so if your having trouble with your head comming up and therefor your body, keep your eyes down.

Do you mean looking up straight ahead or at other athletes in other lanes?

I’m looking at athletes in the other lanes, and usually I’m in the lead until this point. If they’re in the lead I’m really in trouble.

As Boo Schexnayder would say:
“Sometimes you just gotta cut that shit out.”

lol I’d say the same thing goes for not making a basic search before making a post.

These are just two threads that have “drive phase” in the title (search for it outside of the titles and you will have many many more threads as well):

This is decent too:

horses wear special eye pads that stop them from being spooked by other horses, they can see in front of them, but not to the side!
:stuck_out_tongue:

Well thanks for your help so far. Davan as you can probably see, I’ve been reading posts longer than you’ve been on board, I understand the drive phase, I do it quite excellently in practice. I posted here because I believe it is a psycological issue and not informational. Thanks for the links though and I’ll keep reading.

Hey I think I’ve figured it out. Coming off of two years of back and ham problems, I’ve been running from a standing start in practice and in meets. This was the first year back in the blocks (only in meets and an occasional practice) so there was a bit of “race immaturity” and therefore a lack of discipline. I’ll get more block starts in practice this year.
